The Dark Tower Director Reveals Why The Ending Had To Change - GameSpot

Hmm. So Roland and TMIB have a showdown at the end. I suppose he doesn't have to kill him or maybe just think he did. I don't know, all this talk of how they had to do this or had no choice but to change that comes off as excuses to me. What they're saying is pleasing the masses who never read the books matters more than pleasing us devoted fans.

I guess on the other hand they're bringing the story to a lot more people and saying later they'll be more true to the story. I hope they keep their word. I could take one movie done up for Hollywood to get the public hooked if the rest are relatively true to the books.

I think thats the big issue for hollywood. Theyre not commited to making all the books at a high cost, so they had to make a movie and test it. If its well recieved theyll make more, but if not this movie has to be able to stand on its own.

Yeah, hopefully it does and we get to see the books done justice in time. I can accept that. I'd like to read them again at some point, it's been 6-7 years since my third read through.

Im almost more excited about the show. With an hour a week they can do a lot. If the first movie is good we should be good after. Theyll be able to really do the series justice. Maybe even throw some stuff into It and any other books remade into movies.

Yeah, the flashbacks to Mejis when Roland was young will be cool. Idris doesn't exactly look like a teenager, but it'll be good. I believe Roland was 15-16 during that time. Hopefully they get good actors for Alain, Cuthbert and Susan. I'd really like to see HBO do it after how well they did GoT and Westworld.

Apparently everyone is getting Dark Tower tattoos now. I was thinking about that ten years ago. Should've got one back when it was cool and original.

Fuck this movie and fuck stephen king. I read the series about 4 times. Named my guns after the characters in the books. Now stephen kings liberal democrat ass wants to be politically correct and make roland black when the movie is completely based on the fact that roland is white is some straight up bullshit. Most of the fucking story has to do with the racial tension between him and odetta walker, or atleast a very large part. The book explains over and over agin how roland looks like clint eastwood. No oy, noy odetta/suzzana, no eddie Dean, etc.

This movie could be the best film ever created, but out of protest i won't watch it. Shame on folks for sitting by and allowing this.

Allowing this. It's his book, his creation, he can do as he wants. I do see your point about Susanna / Odetta. Clint Eastwood was who they wanted but by now he's about 300 years old.
A lot of us are heavily invested. Shit, I waited damn near 15 years from the time I read gunslinger to the time the Dark Tower came out. But I will give it a chance. Especially because this movie needs to do well for Eddie and co. to even exist on big screen. Don't watch for the studios, watch for the ka-tet, do not forget the face of your father.

That's a bit of a stretch to say most of the story is about the racial tension between Detta and Roland. It was a small part of book two with a few little parts elsewhere. If Roland is black they could just make her white and it mostly makes sense again, but that won't even be a possibility if this movie doesn't do well first. I guess Eddie would have to be black in that case, too. Clint Eastwood is too old to pull off Roland anyway. They'd have to use CGI just to make him walk like he's not 100 years old.

I agree it could and should be the best movie(s) ever made though.

clint eastwood isn't the only white actor. The books go in depth about his and her color. Mostly hers so to now change her color how would that make even the slightest of sense? The story goes on and on multiple times about why she was racist and why she had multiple personalities. Making roland black was a bitch pc move to make a political statement. Would/should folks make excuses for someone casting Kunta Kinte as a white guy in the story roots and just "write around" that? Hog wash.

I agree Hollywood makes a lot of pc moves these days. I'm sure they'll leave out and change plenty more besides that. It could still be a great movie without the Odetta racism subplot though. With the limited time that whole backstory of why she's racist would've probably been cut anyway even if Roland was white. Look at GoT, they don't include a ton of the history there. I don't know, man, the books are my favorite books ever. I'm going to give it a chance and hope they don't butcher the story too much.

It is a mark of how far they have pushed the agenda that I am simply happy they didn't cast a Sassy Black Lesbian as "Rolanda".

I'm on board regardless of the reasons they chose him. If he owns the role he's Roland to me. I'm more worried about doing the books justice than anything else. I'm told there's going to be series and maybe more movies and they'll include all the characters.

Didn't realize you read the books. My favorite series ever.

Theater, first day, without question.

Tough job - who can measure up to Clint Eastwood in his heyday? That's who the book was written for.

I like Idris Elba - awesome actor - Stringer Bell.... wow. And Luther. Sole exception being Heimdall perhaps, which I thought was a sop to the PC crowd.

Who else could you cast in that part? Tall order. Although I had envisioned someone leaner - more beef jerky lean and hard body. Sundried. Maybe a starved Damien Lewis could have been an option?

Also, I hope Idris is less glum and serious in the actual movie vs the trailer.

In any case, looks awesome, and I hope they don't fuck it up like with so many other King movie adaptations. Don't know if I dare watch IT though - that book scared me... :-)

I didn't realize you'd read the books, we've discussed them quite a bit on various threads here.

I don't know who would really make a good Roland accurate to the book besides a younger Clint Eastwood. Yes, they butcher all his work when they're made into movies and i don't get why they don't just leave them intact. He's obviously a great writer.

The verdicts are coming in and reviews aren't looking good. Maybe I won't even go watch it and just wait for Redbox. Seems the King book to movie slump will continue
