Cheapest method for sealing vials

Whats up meso,

Been looking into homebrew and got a question. What supplies are needed for filling and sealing the vials themselves?

So....

What size vials?
What size rubber stopper?
What size seal?
And what is the cheapest way to crimp? If there is an alternate method please share but if not what size crimper and brand? Thanks in advance. I cant seem to find this info with a straight answer to conclude my research

Any size vial you want.
The rubber stopper that fits your vials (should be obvious when you decide on the vials)
No idea what you're talking about size seal???
A butter knife

The seal as in the cap. Also a butter knife?? Lol. You trolling?

The cap is standard sizing IIRC. I haven't ordered vials in a while but it's not difficult. I got 10ml, 20ml, and 100ml vials. Caps and stoppers were easy to get.

Not trolling. I can crimp a vial with a butter knife, a spoon, a Swiss Army knife, a bottle opener, you name it. Would I recommend it as the best seal? Not at all but you did ask for the cheapest way not the most effective.

Wow okay I need to try that man! I appreciate the info. I've brewed before, but with a buddy and he dealt with the equipment side of things. I just brew. Trying the whole operation on my own now

I have thread posted under this one. I came across vial sleeve stoppers. Insert in top of vial, then roll sleeve down over to completely seal. I have not tried them yet, but will be buying for my next purchase. I hate spending so much for pre sealed when I can sterilize and reuse old vials and only spend $15 on new stoppers that require no expensive ass crimper tool. Google search them a bit. Site I will buy them from is down because all the storms right now, but on my shopping list I have 50 stopper sleeves written down at $15. Just make sure to buy as much pins, syringes, stoppers etc as possible as they charge like $25-30 S&H. Not sure if we can name sites on here, but I saw them on gpz. Sofar pricing elseware has come up more expensive, but who knows hopefully someone has info on cheaper reliable source for them

Yeah those are the same guys I use. I saw those but didn't quite understand how they worked or if the looked professional

I'm gonna give it a whack next year, figure as long as gloves, mask are warn, everything is sterile should be okay. I could be wrong, hoped someone would chime in with more experience. But I figure as long as they are all completely sterilized and never reused should be good to go. I will have to look into good sterilization though, ba not strong enough, not sure if 91% isopropyl will eat/degrade rubber. I'm sure some googling or vets chiming in will solve it though ;)

Just found article says clean in 3% peroxide in tupperware, shake the shit out of it for a few minutes, then transfer to new tupperware with 70% isopropyl shake the shit out of it for a few minutes. Drain, leave lid cracked overnight to air dry alcohol. Whether that is right or not don't know Iight prefer low heat in oven, food dehydrator, ghetto rigged hair dryer plugged into tupperware with some vent holes and transfer to clean freezer ziploc right aftetward.....all speculation

    How to sterilize rubber stoppers.

Alright so many bros asked me how to sterilize rubber stopper for home brewed juices.

Since its rubber you cant just dump them into the hot oven as they will just melt down so heat treatment is not really an option.

    Heres what you can do.

Goto grocery store, and pick up these two.

    1. 3% hydroperoxide solution.

    img-442.jpg

    2. 70% isopropyl alcohol.

    ALCOHOL_AL_70.jpg

Now, we are going to use hydrogen peroxide as cleaning agent. You can technically use it as anti bacterial as it DOES kill bacteria, but it takes around 12 hours to completely kill broad spectrum bacterias. And who got times these days anyway lol

Do wash rubber stopper, do the following method.

    1. Dump all the rubber stoppers into the tupperware like this

    2. And pour in good amount of hydrogen peroxide.

    3. Put the lid and make sure its closed tightly, and shake the tupperware like a mad man. Shake for good minute or so.

    4. Now, prepare for alcohol in a tupper ware. We are gonna shake like mad man again but this time in alcohol solution.

    5. After shaking in alcohol for good minute or so, now prepare alcohol washed sterilie tupper ware.

    6. Just put them in to the tupper ware and dry it overnight. You can open the lid little bit but you have to put it in the place where there is no air movement otherwise it will be conteminated again.

    7. After drying , just use the rubber stopper.

This. They can be baked at around 250-300 as well then dipped into BA before using them.

i soak mine in 5% bleach solution for 30 mins, then in 70% IPA for 30, then put into foil that has been wiped with IPA and dry them at 250 F in the oven for an hour or two, no melting at that temp and soaking in bleach sterilized them, so the main purpose of heat was just to dry them, works out pretty well

Here's what I found. Last post seems like he has no issues. Yes it is a paste, and in no way information that I came up with/created/or even tested myself

Cheapest method for sealing vials?
Some silicone caulk leftovers I have in the basement. You asked for the cheapest remember? :D

Now seriously
Vials come in standardized neck sizes, usually measured in mm
If I'm not mistaken, most 10 ml vials have a 20mm standard neck size

Why don't you buy both vials and rubber stoppers/Aluminum crimps from the same place?

I've read about special stoppers glued in place, but IDK if they need special vials to work.
To bothersome IMO. Why not just good ol' Aluminum crimps + tabletop crimper tool?

Yeah man, I will probably go this method. It seems the most hassle free

Thanks man. I'm rea

I have used hot glue gun to seal holes from using 18 gauge vent pins, but made sure not to pass needle through glue as to avoid any being taken into the pin tip. Bet you could seal regular stopper top on with hot glue gun though just around the seal/edge. I'm pretty set on buying the sleeve stoppers myself now do to the ease of use, lack of cost, and not needed a $150-200 crimper. If I die after using them I will give wife my pword to post on here and let you guys know it was a bad idea lol

Hmmm
glue sounds too risky

if it's for personal use, search youtube videos on how to crimp vials without a crimper
If it's for something bigger, positively get a crimper.

Oh I never poked the glue, just dabbed hole where 18 gauge vent pin was in vial stopper to make sure air tight. I had 18s because I made tne my first time, it was not micronized.......never again pinning 2 times a day with a fuckin nail, that shit was rediculous. But yeah had a lot of 18s leftover so used for vent pins, they left a little leakage in stopper that was visible when pushing air into vial so I dabbed the vent pin hole with hot glue gun. Not the whole top, just the vent whole so I had access to the rest of the stopper top.

Hmmm mm leave leaking hole from 18 gauge vent pin or seal it with dab of glue that does not cover 10% of stopper lid effectively sealing vial leaving 90% usuable........

Did you know super glue was invented for Vietnam to seal wounds and does not kill you, same thing as liquid bandages but more effective. ......?
