Anyone run the zap caps CR by whatman non sterile? If you use a .22 non sterile bottle top filter is the oil still clean and no risk of illness?

Not really fine its really the only thing that needs to be sterile besides the vial or vials your finished product is going into

Digging this up. I've used zapcap crs as well. What info did you find to reassure you that everything was good? I remember reading that once it passes through the filter it's considered sterile... Can't remember.Nevermind the thread fellas I did more research and found my answers.

Yes but the filter outlet might have some bacteria on it.
At least rub on some 70% alcohol and allow to evaporate. Just in case.

From the info I picked up off two very knowledgeable brewers, the .2 membrane is so minute that once the media passes through along with the BA, it is considered sterile. The zapcaps come sealed in plastic bag Individualy from medlab. @master.on yes you can wipe
it with alcohol but I’ve relaized sometimes you’ll find super tiny fibers from micro towels or whateve you use to wipe it with. Even alcohol wipes leaves tiny fibers behind very annoying if your anal brewer. One brewer said if I wanted to be extra extra careful, I could pass a bit of pure ba through the membrane first then continue with the process of filtration. I’ve nver had to do that ever and I’ve had my fair share of cooking. Never a red spot or infection from my zapcaps. Ever. I love them
Yeah I've been using them for a year. @JackSmooth asked me about em and I had the same question a year or so ago. I remember emailing medlabsupply and this was their response.
In regards to sterility, which is a very strong word, ultimately , something is either sterile, or not. There really are no degrees of sterility. Hospitals are careful about using this term at times, as well.
We have sterile vials, we sell, but they come to us, From the manufacturer, completely sealed, un,opened, and are sold as such. We also have the COA s, for this product.
As far as the filters, there are two terms working here , Filtering out bacteria, which is the case with the filtration process. The filters that you received, are completely sealed, and protected from
External surroundings. Even on the package from the supplier, it states they are not sterile. Once opened, anything could be subject to the air. However, the filtering process aims at filtering out , from
Said solution, potential bacteria. The filtering industry, is doing just that , filtering out, from said product, for usage. Your filters are coming to you, completely sealed .
Hopefully, this will help clear up, both terms, and the goal, achieved , for these processes.

Alcohol doesn’t sterilize anything.
I Personally do this. Run Ba Throw it and then discard it and then attach my sterile Media bottle on and put the brew in. I bought a big box of bottle top filters and they aren't sterile and doing this method I havnt had any problems.

BA doesn't kill bacteria.
At least not in the low concentrations found in gear.
It merely prevents existing bacteria from multiplying.
While plastic doesn't feed bacteria so you won't find many bacteria on filters, BA will leave any bacteria totally unharmed.
At least spray the outlet with 70% alcohol and allow it to dry.
This won't kill any eventual bacteria inside the filter membrane though.

It does but you'd need 70% alcohol and allow it to fully evaporate.

Ugh you’re impossible and spread so much donkey shit everywhere. Isopropyl is not used in the medical/pharmaceutical industry to clean “work areas” since King Arthur was around.
Everyone who is using these zapcaps, you will not die. Wiping with alcohol or anything will simply be another vector for error/contamination. Sterile is better but you’ll survive.

I never meant isopropyl alcohol
it doesn't work nearly as well as 70% ETHYL alcohol.
Also, I never meant wiping
I meant spraying 70% ethyl alcohol and allow it to fully dry.
Repeat several times for further safety.
For true pharma grade clean room sterility, you can even sterile filter that 70% ethyl alcohol, before spraying.
