filter cracked

Been awhile since last brewed and used to use the nalgene bottle tops and they were out so I grabbed the autofill and right when i was almost done the bottom started to crack and bubble. Does this need to be refiltered now

2nd question How many ml can be filtered through the bottle top filters jw because it flows nice in the beginning then once it gets through 100ml or so it slows down to pretty much a drop every couple seconds

What cracked?

The membrane or its housing?
The vacuum tube fitting?

You can replace filters when it becomes too slow.
Don't wait for it to fully clog.

Safer to refilter. Might be okay but I'd need pictures before I'd trust it....I'd rather just refilter in any case. Most use glass media bottles for just this reason.

Bottle top filters have capacities. I use Millipore Durapore 0.22 micron with 500ml capacity. Rate can depend on your carrier oil and temperature too but mine also get slow - safflower oil mostly. Takes a number of hours for 500ml keeping it at 15psi. That said...that's the equivalent to 50 bottles of test which lasts me a LONG time (years) so I don't really care if it takes 8hrs to filter. I'm about quality sterile product.

The receiver end started releasing air bubbles and making a sound I took it apart right away and poorer into another reciver bottle and put the cap on

Yea these were garbage bottom receiver part started to crack and release air bubbles and after the first 10 mins slowed down to a dribble. Mine was 500ml capacity too I was able to so abkit 400ml between the 2 I used but it took some time and I used mct oil

What's up guys. Just finished my first brew. My Nalgene bottletop filter receiver bottle cracked on the bottom also. Pressure was about 7 psi. So the recommended pressure is 15? Had one extra bottle. Switched bottles and finished filtering with 5psi. Just took couple's hours..

You’ll only be able to reach the higher vacuum levels with glass media bottles. The plastic ones crack too easy.

It's not even worth it. I found it somewhere once under the specs. I forget what brand. Trust me I wish they didn't crack cause they're already sterile and cheap as hell. But your best bet is to go with glass and sterilize it yourself.

IF you're so dedicated on making the plastic work, filter on top of a Pyrex baking dish/pan. So if it cracks completely you won't lose your oil.

Got it. Thanks for advice. I will look into glass Jar next time. Is the receiver jar that's only likely to crack.. Does the receiver need to be glass also?

Media bottle/receiver needs to be glass or should be. Maybe we misunderstood what cracked for you? Plastic receivers crack all the time so we use glass, nothing else should be cracking.

One more question. I was going to draw the oil from a receiver bottle with a syringe and fill capped sterial 20ml jugs. I read once of people just pouring oil from the media to the sterial 20ml jugs and then capping. Is this a acceptable practice?

When you are capping and crimping your own vials there are a lot more variables at play. You can buy "open" sterile vials but they're expensive. And you would then have to buy stoppers, and caps, and a crimper. I would highly recommend getting sealed sterile vials and filling them yourself until you get the hang of it. And also you can't get 20ml but I'd suggest 10ml for the sake of the stoppers integrity. Pinning a stopper that many times will eventually break in little pieces.

You guys know agood site top buy a Nalgene Nylon receiver . I see plenty that sells by the cases. Would like to buy just a couple for now.. I see these for 12 bucks top and bottom. Could just go with that and use the medium bottle for storage or something
