Can't fall asleep with CPAP

So I got a CPAP Tuesday morning but it took me over 2 hours to fall asleep while wearing it. It stayed on all night and I must've slept deeper than normal because I had dreams. I never have dreams. Tried it again last night and gave up.

Anyone have any advice?

I just started with mine this week. It’s been a full week. First couple of nights was tough. Third night was ok. Now night #4 and 5 were good

Maybe take some melatonin or Tylenol PM to get sleepy first

I read where they recommend to put it on early and watch TV or read for a bit. I'm gonna try that. It's been extremely frustrating knowing I have the solution and not being able to use it

I'm about to start my CPAP machine so it's interesting to read this. They said my case was critical blood oxygen levels coming down to 60% and up to 79 stopages per hour. Anything over 30 is critical they said.
Mine was mild. 7 to 10 times per hour. That's still enough to keep from getting restful sleep imo. Good luck man

Getting the right kind of mask is important as is the adjustments to keep you from feeling like you can't breath (to much forced air or too little).

Good advice using it prior to bed so you aren't focused on the mask while trying to sleep. In the end, I don't know many people that have been able to sleep "normally" once they started using the CPAPs.

At least you'll get quality sleep the short time you are asleep verses a lot of poor quality sleep.

Is it the feeling of the mask or the wind tunnel effect of the air shooting in your mouth/nose?

If it's the feeling of the air, then maybe bipap or vpap is better

The mask seems fine. But once I lay down all I can focus on is breathing. If I could forget about the damn thing I'd probably fall asleep and be fine

Just keep using it. You'll get used to it... To a certain extent. Using it 6hrs per night is considered a success.

Thanks man. I'm banking on the fact that wearing for a while before trying to sleep will help

It might. It never did anything for me. I put it on right before I fall asleep... At this point, I think it actually triggers sleep.

I bought a small attachment that connects the tubes together and inside there is a piece of felt that I put oils on. I typically use eucalyptus. It helps give me a calming effect while I fall asleep.

I feel like wearing it makes my heart speed up

Another reason to wear it while watching TV or reading. Gets acclimated when you’re not trying to go to sleep

And speaking of masks, many people feel they are “mouth breathers” not “nose breathers” However if you’re having trouble keeping your airway open, of course your body is going to open your mouth for more airflow.

A nasal mask (mine is Dreamware) will keep the nose open and the brain won’t open your mouth. For a lot of people, not everyone obviously.

I liked the less invasive nasal mask so I tried it and found I can keep my mouth closed all night.

I also recommend an auto-adjusting unit like the ResMed 10.

I didn’t bother with a sleep study since all these costs are straight outta my pocket. I joined a cpap forum, asked questions and bought a very low hour unit. New mask and hose

Working great
