The history lesson I'll leave to Google.
Cuba has 2 main sources of income, tourism and tobacco. Most of the people their smoke cigarettes but not many smoke the branded cigars. They are very poor, of they do smoke they have these cigars called peso cigars. There are 4 brands and they get 50 cigars for a peso. They are allotted one a month.
There are many brands but Habanos SA has them lumped into categories. There are the global brands, Cohiba,HUpmann, Hoyo de Monterrey, Romeo y Julieta, Partagas. The global brands are the only brands to get a Reserva and Gran Reserva edition which there is only one every year. Highly sought after. There are also Regional Editions, Edicion Limitada.... Too much to cover there.
The most iconic cigars are the Cohiba Lancero and Trinidad Fundadores. These are what Fidel smoked.
1999-2001 are considered the worst years for Cuban Cigars, quality of construction was terrible. Also the first years they switch away from the straight Corojo tobacco and moved to a hybrid version.
As far as soil yes, it's like wine, the composition of it has an effect on flavor. Conditions, seed, lineage of the plant.... It's literally like weed and wine.
I could go on for hours about this shit but it's too much to type on my phone and I have t work so google a little and get back to me with anymore questions later.
