Stock headers and an exhaust that needs replacing currently.

Anyone ever tackle this? I have a local shop that quoted me 800$ for true dual with a little rumble in the mufflers, stock headers and no cat (fuck that on an older car). I'm thinking about actually throwing the headers in there as well if I can find a quality/price balance.

Any trusted online resources for this that you guys know of?

I'm pretty handy so heating up bolts and ripping knuckles apart isn't an issue. Getting the correct parts the first time is the issue for me.

I was thinking if I sent it to the shop with new headers in place I'd save some coin.

Worth the trouble?

Oh man. Are these stock headers, like, original, thatve never come off the block? That sounds like an absolute bitch of a time..

Correct.

Considering the engine is plain jane I'm inclined to save the extra cash and just get the pipes and mufflers

fuckin easy as pinning ur ass! lol first of all the factory exhaust is not headers off the motor but exhaust manifolds. get urself a sawsall w a 10inch metal blade . cut the tailpipes off the mufflers or muffler ,the mufflers, intermediate pipe w converter . now comes the y pipe . ur not using this over so no need to try to remove nuts off studs on manifolds. simply cut y pipe as close to manifold as possible . now comes the manifolds . ur monte has an 305 ho motor.the heads of the bolts will be rusty but will come right out regardless. just make sure you use a quality 6 point socket 9/16 is factory size . if its rotted then beat on a 14mm or even 13mm 6 point ,as long as its tight. never broke a manifold bolt in the head yet on dozens of small block chevys I've done .remove manifolds . clean head flange w scraper and sandpaper, usually no factory gasket here. call summit or jetgs and order a quality set of headers like hooker brand . i believe you injected this motor back a bit so buy collector extensions that match your headers w oxygen sensor bung . headless require gaskets at the heads ,i recommend fed pro and gaskets at collector i use perceys aluminum. the sales guy will help you . this is common stuff. as for rest of exhaust just have a local shop do it . should be between 4 and 5 hund with good mufflers . not flow master. but stainless magnaflow . good luck

Appreciated. I did swap it to FI previously, good memory. I'll call tomorrow to discuss with them about parts. You make it sound pretty easy, probably should be lol. I'd really love to get the original headers out, they have a bunch of capped tubing from the emissions bullshit. Looks like shit imo

yeah they're called air tubes , all that emissions shit will b eliminated and clean up the engine . ive built probably 30 cars in my time plus I'm a full time mechanic so yes its easy but nothing you can't tackle . take your time wear glasses when cutting and don't force nothing ,that's when shit goes wrong and you bust your hand . lol any questions hit me up

Thanks again. I'll update with a decision soon, provided they are open for business tomorrow

Summit or rock auto are two of my favorites. Hard to beat rock auto's prices. Putting manifolds or headers on while still in the bay is and always will be a pain in the ass. Especially long tubes because of the tight clearance. If its pulled and on a rotisserie its basic lego work. Of course if u care about your plumbing and electrical work id see if you can grab a mfg long tube header that comes ceramic coated otherwise you will have to send it off and out source the coating. Stainless headers are extremely hot. Highly recommend the coating. Wraps just hold in moisture. Moisture = rust and rot. Pacesetter is the cheap LT but almost always with LTs you get what you pay for. Texas speed, american racing, kooks. All good brands and very pricey. Then you gotta do the coating on top of that. Ran in to the same problem for my supercharged tahoe project. None of the quality LT companies produce a ceramic LT. Im looking at 3k for the american racing SS LTs and the jet hot ceramic coating. Thats not including install cuz ill do it myself.

On another note short tubes may be in order. Stock manifolds have completely and utterly sucked till the 2008 ish era. Most modern v8s have a very similar stock manifold compared to a shorty so theres no benefit going to a ST. But in your case it will be a sizeable improvement and also a cheaper one.

Also consider tubing size for the hp application. An engine is just a glorified air pump dont wanna go too big. If your talking 300 er so hp i wouldnt go any bigger than 2.5" on your duals. Probably more like 2". Losing compression is a bitch

how you make out with them headers ?
Haven't pulled the trigger yet but I'm looking at some black ceramic lt on summit. Looking like 600 - 1000 for the pair.

it's only a 305 with an Edelbrock intake manifold and a Holley efi kit. Not much going on in the power plant department. Maybe 180hp with a tailwind? No clue

honestly i wouldn't spend that much on headers , its a mild 305 . save the money and buy a pair of regular hooker headers that are painted. and yes they paint burns rt off and they will get surface rust but last forever . the pair on my 69 camaro are from 1996 and zero problems. if its a show car or you just want it too look really nice then id go with a stainless set ,and don't buy any chinese shit off eBay . also don't go bigger than 1 5/8 primaries or performance will actual suffer .and always long tube headers. if you want ill pick a few pairs for you to check out. i just picked up a nice set of hooker stainless headers for my 69 that I'm swapping to ls power

don't use gaskets that come w the headers . they will blow out ! the exhaust shop will make the collector reducers .also don't forget to have him weld an o2 sensor bung onto collector reducer ,not into header . for that motor 2/14 exhaust pipe is fine . 2 1/2 will sound better but for that motor is overkill and will hurt performance . use quality mufflers. if u want old then a 50 series flow master works . if you're gonna drive this a lot them something a little less aggressive is best . i like the magna flow stainless mufflers .a mild rumble at low rpm,s but sound great when you get on it .

425$ to get LT headers a basic coating, a "small upcharge" for one of their colors. Still waiting on a final quote. Just sent in all my info.
