Nalgene = Whatman ?

So I have done my homework enough to give brewing a shot and am at the gathering brewing supplies stage. I have used the helpful MedLab shopping list sticky to line up most of what I will need.

But, MedLab is out of stock on the Whatman syringe filters. Can I just sub out for a .22 Nalgene? If so, is there any particular process change I need to be aware of, like two step filtration from a .45 or somehing? Thanks in advance

Check gpz labs. They have Whatmans.

I like Whatmans filters. You can easily push through 100ml. It makes it lot easier if the oil is warm (not hot) when pushing through the filter.

Will do. While I have you here...if i am going to be brewing no more than a 100ml at a time how much larger than my batch should my working flask be? I was planning to go with a 250ml to keep it managable

250ml beaker is perfect for 100ml brew. Relatively larger volume beaker has a larger diameter meaning larger base area to make contact with heat source ie hot plate to help transfer the heat more efficiently to the beaker.

Since its your first time doing this manageable would be doing small amounts at a time. So id clearly stick below 100ml (10 vials).

And just to throw in my 2c on the filter id clearly stick with Whatman and the .45um. Since your not familiar with the flow rate coming out of the filter you wouldn't be able to recognize when the filter fails. Any brand other than Whatman has a high probability of failing under a certain pressure which isn't much in my experience. This pressure can also rise with less flow as the filter increasingly builds with debris. A common thing people do even with the whatman filter is add more pressure as the drip slows down which is also common in the syringe filter to sterile vial method. There's other factors as well but i won't bore you with the minutiae.
Funny Fact: I once pressed a 60ml syringe down with a caulking gun as hard I could and couldn't get the filter to break on a whatman .45um.
