Anyone got any tips on growing watermelon? I'm in the north so probably not the best environment. Been trying to grow a watermelon for over a month now and no vines. Also I think something might be eating the leaves.

Whats the the low and high average temp the past month .. soil temp is a huge factor in plant growth.. if your fairly far north and the soil isn't warm enough yet.. you won't get far

Thats what I was thinking. Been cool lately, 70s day 50s night. Supposed to warm back up to 80-90s next week

That's up there.. you definitely have bugs eating this leaves.. an insecticide will stop that.. find it at a Lowes or home depot.. just make sure it safe for fruit plants

Warmer weather will help.. give it time.. if want to help your odds buy some fertilizer/plant food and the insecticide.. as long as you get a few weeks or longer where the Temps don't drop past the 60s..

Thats a little cool for watermelon but doable especially at that young stage. Watermelon needs fertilizer, especially phosphorus preferably put down before you plant to set the roots. You will also need bees to pollinate the blooms.
Ok i just put down osmocote fertilizer a week ago to see if that helps
What is that Cedar Chips?? Is it even real wood? Its not the rubber stuff as well is it? Is it treated with anything? Allz I am saying is that looks like the stuff you put in your shrubbery TO KEEP ANYTHING ELSE FROM GROWING...
I've seen watermelon grown down south and take off and cover a yard. That was an Augustine/centipede/dirt yard. How's it supposed to vine-off and root in with that wood chip down?? Just saying I would think you would want a 'weed-conducive" environment to grow that one. Even if the vines don't root along the way, I really doubt that they would survive on top of a wood chip intended to stop plant growth. Might want to rake that shit up if you want to stand a chance. At least clear some paths...
I'm thinking of trying some cantaloupe this year I think they actually lay down wood racks for those melons to stay up off the ground...
Keep in mind I am just bored and spit-balling...
Also check yer soil PH and make sure you didn't blast it out of whack...
And scatter some of that BLACK KOW fertilizer in the yellow bag. Not too much tho it will mess it up. That stuff will grow lickable titties on a bore hog...
I was told by other watermelon growers that the mulch helps retain the moisture and weeds out. It was also my understanding that the vines grow from the center outwards. Not sure about the ph level but we've had some cold weather lately and I believe it just stalled out.
I'll be sure to check k out that black kow fertilizer.

They look good if grown from seed! I’d give em a mist of some organic neem oil solution. That should solve any issues with pests.
Been hearing a lot about need oil lately. I'll have to check it out
