What the hell was this in my hamburger?

Working at the fire house today and we made burgers. Bit in and felt something hard and spit it out. Not sure what this is. I kept eating the rest of the burger but now paranoid I'm gonna get food poisoning. The burger tasted fine though. It's hard and almost feels and looks like beef jerky. Any ideas?

I stay away from the ground beef . Stick with the bird and fish. Steak occasionally. Plus the price of beef is absurd right now the way groceries have skyrocketed lately!

Chicken and fish have been pretty stable in price so still a good deal. Besides I hardly eat red meat.
