Why I hate being a black man | Orville Lloyd Douglas | Comment is free | theguardian.com

Every time I sit on a crowded street car, bus, or subway train in Toronto, I know I will have an empty seat next to me. It's like a broken record. Sometimes I don't mind having the extra space, but other times I feel awkward, uncomfortable, and annoyed.

I know I have good hygiene, I dress appropriately, and I mind my own business. However, recently, I finally became cognizant of why people might fear being around me or in close proximity to me: I am a black male. Although Canadian society presents the façade of multiculturalism the truth is Canada has a serious problem with the issue of race.

I didn't realize it until my sister said to me:

Orville, people are afraid of you. You are a six foot tall black man with broad shoulders.

My sister is right, people don't sit next to me on the street car, the subway or on the bus because they are afraid.

The issue of black self-hatred is something I am supposed to pretend does not exist. However, the great French psychiatrist Frantz Fanon wrote about this issue in his ground breaking book Black Skin White Masks in a chapter called "the Lived Experience of the Black Man". According to Fanon, the black man is viewed in the third person, and he isn't seen as a three-dimensional human being. The black man internalizes the perspectives of white society and its negative thoughts about blackness affect his psyche. In the chapter, Fanon discusses a white child calling him the "N word" and how he becomes cognizant of how he is different and viewed as someone people should fear.

There is also a fear by some black people that discussing the issue of self-hatred is a sign of weakness. There is a discourse that black people engender: that black is beautiful. But the truth is, the image of blackness is ugly – at least it's perceived that way. There is nothing special or wonderful about being a black male – it is a life of misery and shame.

The issue of black self-hatred is usually depicted from a female point of view. There are documentaries such as Dark Girls which aired on Oprah's OWN network earlier this year, in which black women discuss their feelings of self hatred for having dark skin. There are numerous books, articles, documentaries, and essays published by black female writers describing black self-hated. Black women are not afraid to speak out about their self-loathing, yet for some reason, black men are silent about our own contempt for what we are.

A lot of black men don't want to acknowledge the feelings of disgust we have for ourselves. It is considered emasculating to even admit the existence of such thoughts. I think my own self-hated manifests from the exterior, from the outside world. It is born out of the despair and the unhappiness I see within a lot of young black men.

I can honestly say I hate being a black male. Although black people like to wax poetic about loving their label I hate "being black". I just don't fit into a neat category of the stereotypical views people have of black men. In popular culture black men are recognized in three areas: sports, crime, and entertainment. I hate rap music, I hate most sports, and I like listening to rock music such as PJ Harvey, Morrissey, and Tracy Chapman. I have nothing in common with the archetypes about the black male.

There is so much negativity and criminal suspicion associated with being a black male in Toronto. Yet, I don't have a criminal record, and I certainly don't associate with criminals. In fact, I abhor violence, and I resent being compared to young black males (or young people of any race) who are lazy, not disciplined, or delinquent. Usually, when black male youth are discussed in Toronto, it is about something going wrong.

Honestly, who would want to be black? Who would want people to be terrified of you and not want to sit next to you on public transportation?

Who would want to have this dark skin, broad nose, large thick lips, and wake up in the morning being despised by the rest of the world?

A lot of the time I feel like my skin color is like my personal prison, something that I have no control over, for I am judged just because of the way I look.

Not discussing the issue doesn't mean it is going to go away. In fact, by ignoring the issue, it simply lurks underneath the surface. I believe a dialogue about self hatred should be brought to the fore in the public sphere, so that some sort of healing and the development of true non-label based pride can occur.

Of course, I do not want to have these feelings, to have these dark thoughts about being a black man. However, I cannot deny that this is the way I feel. I don't want to be ashamed of being a black man; I just want to be treated as an individual based on the content of my character, and not just based on the colour of my skin.

Very interesting article... really should make you stop and think .I Would like to hear some thought out views from some black members.......

Honestly I would too. I'm from Hispanic descent from my fathers side but my mother is white and both my mother and father are both really light tan. So all my life people think I am Caucasian while I part Latino as well. I can see where this is coming from I believe it to be true.

This is much more common than people think, I know several black guys who are fed up with the bad rap the black community has brought upon them. Everything from prison statistics to education, to deadbeat fathers, it's all very clear. Black people get ridiculed for acting too white if they are trying to act professional or get ahead in life. People think I am racist but I'm not, I call it like I see it and my black friends will call it before I will.

Everybody has some cross to bear in this life. Most everybody at least.
Its not this dudes fault. I understand. But its not the fault of other races
that blacks commit more violent crimes. Self preservation over political correctness.
If youve got your health, put a smile on your face and move on with life.:)

Its a VERY TOUCHY Subject. And if you consider we are living withing the same 100 year period in which and entire civilization was SUBJUGATED INTO SLAVERY on such a grand scale - When was the last time this occurred...?

We all have an inherent "grounding" or pride in our family history. It becomes more difficult - I AM sure when you look back and see that your were EITHER conquested or SOLD by your own ancestors, and then can not see your own past - whatever it may be. The topper being that you don't even have a name and INHERIT your former owners family name once freed...!

You top that off then integrated into a society that does not necessarily want you around any more, and WTF?!? I live in the heart of the US where slavery flourished for Profit$, and the end result not even yet fully maturing. Integration in the smelting pot of the United States is so critical. Its a slow long and painful process that was put on to our generations from both ends. The SHOE could have been on the other foot - in another life. So when you consider Control$ is POWER. Power DOES NOT relinquish control. And you are NOT in the CONTROLLING POWER. It kinda puts you in a hard spot. Imagine trying to gain employment when the hiring owners don't like you for your skin color alone. We won't even get into genetic propensity and GENETIC vs. LEARNED as this MAY prove the true test of EVOLUTION. But there is no doubt in my mind that the world has a negative view of African Integration due to the happenings in the US since slavery.

So its a biological/evolutionary conundrum as I see it.
1) Are stronger people inclined to be "dumber" or have less intellectual capacity. Does the Left brain overpower the right in these scenarios? Is that changeable?
2) Were Africans chosen for sale to slavery bigger, stronger, and dumber? I dont think so and due to the WHOLESALE VALUE at the time.
3) But WHO SURVIVED...? The boat ride over? The days in the fields.? Is this the ultimate "Hitler Program" to genetic weeding realized?
4) Who made it through the day in slavery best. A big dumb fella that was able to work a shitload and no sweat. And not even care to complain. OR A little SMART fella that knew how to "cover and stride" successfully.? How many smart slaves just hauled-ass. But was it because they were physically strong enough to survive the escape route, OR because they were smart enough to navigate the HAZARDS of said route. OR did it require BOTH?
5) Was the result at the end of the day that ONLY the BEST of the AFRICAN SOCIETY which was brought over the ONLY which survived to proliferate? And IN FACT, they are smarter and stronger their white American counterparts, and the only difference being that they were kept out of school once freed? And not cared for equally once integrated? IT seems to be a continual policy as the US ONLY Imports/Emigrates the best of the best. We just no longer Actively Culture...
6) And what about the UNWRITTEN BIOLOGICAL INTEGRATION?!?!? All the WHITE Slave owners that Cherished that Sweet Chocolate. (Being facetious). But there was a LOT of INBREEDING that went on. How many slave owners found a light skinned baby born to one of their female slaves and even resembled him? How many of them had that baby taken away somewhere to be raised out of site. Or WORSE, murdered the baby secretly..! How many babies were born WHITE!!?? Look around you. How many "white folks" in the US have darker skin, and not because of Native American or European Scandinavian intermingling... How may "Black Folks" are not as black as AFRICANS on the Continent AFRICA...! Its all a big unwritten SECRET that has been poorly managed by EVIL AND IGNORANCE as bad as any time in history. At the end of the day, the travesty of a race of folks being SUBJUGATED ON THAT LEVEL CAN ONLY BE THE WORK OF THE DEVIL. To proliferated the ignorance and pain further, it to let him continue to succeed.

THE IRONY of the situation which will stick the DEVIL RIGHT IN HIS ASS. Is that the GREED$ that empowered the whole conundrum, will be the $ame Greed which ENDS IT. As market values equalize in an ever diluting world economy, one tends to see past things like COLOR. An example of the DEVIL POWER INVOLVED with this conundrum is that society would in fact WORK WOMEN, and out of the CONTEXT of the BIBLE, before they would employ "African Americans". Further irony is THIS only dropping/equalizing market labor rates even more quickly than otherwise. Thus only expediting the final market equalization - race considered. History is happening NOW.

Roman times indeed....

Correct me if I'm wrong but,
Are you seriously suggesting that black people are the only race that has ever been enslaved?

???self hating white liberal hippie douchebag

Gosh pittbox, you don't even know me. Actually I've always been considered right wing. You don't even know what color I am. I could be white, black, brown, yellow. I've always liked to be aware of what's going on. You know the old saying "keep your friends close but your enemies closer"

Right wing (conservative) or Left wing (liberal)

Conservative is kinda the philosophy of searching for the truth.
Liberal (as of todays thought) is searching for the truth you want to find.
Moderate is just kinda nothingness.

If being far right means searching for the truth with intent. A person can never be too far right.
Far left, well at least they are searching for something. Craziness maybe, but searching.
Moderate, still kinda nothingness.

One problem that the right has is that they let the left define (what it is to be on the right) , They are stupid to let someone define who they are without rebuttal.

Watch some of those stupid ass George Carlin youtubes. He defines who the right is and then rails them for being who he says they are.
The left is good at that. The right keeps thinking that someday people will see through the bs. When???????

How can you stand living in Fort Lauderdale?
I hated it.
So many white hating Spanish.

Yes you are wrong. The first paragraph says something different. It just says its a socially noteworthy event in a recent decade or so on a pretty grand scale. As far as my use of the term "Civilization", I was referring to the civilization of African Americans. Clearly the continent of Africa has not been enslaved by the US. LOL Although some would believe..

YES - Slavery or ENSLAVEMENT has gone of forever. I am apparently ENSLAVED by my addiction to hear myself think. I am definitely enslaved to having to work to eat. I am ENSLAVED to have to take a shit about once a day too.

And YES - "Whitee IS CRAZY....!":p

Correct me if I'm wrong but,
Are you seriously suggesting that black people are the only race that has ever been enslaved?

I try not to judge a person by there appearance but I think we all do it, unknowingly before we get to know a person.
I work with this kid, he's about
6-3, dreads, dark skin, tattoos. We found a wallet on a job site one day, credit cards, about 700$ in cash. Guess who was the first to say " we need to get this man back his wallet"?

I was sitting in this tire change place or something a few years back. You know the kinda shop with a bunch of chairs, a tv running in the corner, and the retail staff constantly sizing you up to see how well you can grab your ankles... Anyways, this black guy sitting near me engaged a chat. I dont know who started it - I'm a sociable fella:D.. But somehow the conversation led into President Obama, and now I recall it was right before he went into office. We were talking about tv news clip, or magazine someone was reading as a prelude. But he slowly went into a rant about his disapproval of our pending president not unsimilar to Rush Limbaugh on amphetamines... LOL. I played in slow cause I was not sure if I was being baited for blast, but he made clear to me that he was informed pertaining to his beliefs, well enough spoken, considerate in his thought process, and convicted to these beliefs. What I could not get past the entire time was the fact that his physical profile fit something more along the lines of a younger black fella that would not know, much less give a shit about politics. And in a geographic region where many black folks CAN unfortunately turn out to fit that profile. We live and learn everyday, else we are DEAD and just don't know it..:)

Gosh pittbox, you don't even know me. Actually I've always been considered right wing. You don't even know what color I am. I could be white, black, brown, yellow. I've always liked to be aware of what's going on. You know the old saying "keep your friends close but your enemies closer"

I agree. The south of Florida should be classified as ANOTHER COUNTRY.. HOWEVER, with that said, the population of folks RESIDING there that ARE NOT US citizens is more that likely on the high side. And not even Mexicans which are really just our "Indian Brothers"

One thing you can pretty much bank on a Black Man being is A US CITIZEN.!! It should further be noted that he and his paid as great a price as ANY for their portion and rights in THIS COUNTRY which we all must protect. That ALONE - makes him YOUR BROTHER... Its funny. I bet in a war time scenario, the color of skin goes out the window pretty quick. Its also funny how when in peacetime, your FAVORITE ENEMIES are the one's closest to you..:(

How can you stand living in Fort Lauderdale?
I hated it.
