Hi Oprah,
My name is Shawn Bean and I am currently in school studying to be a naturopathic physician. I graduated with my undergraduate degree from West Chester University, with a BS in Kinesiology and Nutrition, while also having an extensive background in Naturopathic Medicine, Herbs, and studies of Cultures Nutritional Patterns. Being involved with athletics since an early age, I have always been fascinated by the human body by thinking of how to make it quicker, faster, and stronger through natural means. As a bodybuilder, personal trainer, nutritional consultant for (15) years, and an athlete all my life, I have had the privilege to work next to some of the biggest names in the sport. I am not telling you all of this to gloat about myself, but to share with you that through my experiences; I have came to see unfortunately, patients many times are just treated by symptoms rather than the cause. I have seen this time after time, with the patients that come to me. As a professional, this really irks me that patients are being treated like this, and after them spending there life fortune in many cases, they still have no treatment that has been productive with their issue and they feel helpless with no clue what to do next, which results in doctor hopping, to try to find a physician that will listen to him/her of what is going on with their body. I believe the patient knows best of what truly is going on within their body when they try to describe what is going on. For several years now, I have been following your issue of weight gain and loss, and with all your personal frustration that you have experienced with this, I have also seen this in many other individuals lives that I have seen and are currently seeing. I am here to tell you that I truly believe that you, and many other individuals experiencing this misfortune, can get past this as soon as you educate yourself realizing that in many cases no matter what you do, nothing will change with your body if you either have a hormonal issue or hold anger and resentment deep within your subconscious, which will not allow you to progress until in some cases, issues are resolved. I know this may sound cookey, but I seriously have seen this be the reason in many cases.
I am writing you this letter with 2 reasons at mind. The first to share a story with you on a personal note of how my fiance has had the same issue with her weight gain and loss, as you and many other individuals in this world. My second is to give you brief information of my knowledge and how I believe many individuals can have hope to get better, if treated properly and educated.
My fiance has been going through weight issues for years while physicians have been telling her its all in her head and her labs are "normal". Their resolution was to go seek
Psychological Counseling. The ironic thing is that she is currently in Graduate School to be a Psychologist. As a Professional Nutrition & Fitness Consultant, my colleague, which is a Medical Doctor and I, deal with a lot of metabolic issues within the clinic. A lot of our patients are one that have been to doctor after doctor, with no resolution. My fiance was one of those individuals. She has been working out and eating properly for years and has not been able to loose weight. She is very determined, but frustrated than ever. Working as a consultant for the clinic, I was furious with the physicians handling her issues. She would call me on her way home from her physician appointments crying, sharing with me that the physician did nothing and it was a waste of time. I decided enough was enough, and began to do my own testing on her with a medical physician over seeing it.
I believe due to modern day lifestyles and stress today our bodies are under, we tend to over tax our body. Over stressing the body can result in the body using up vital nutrients and minerals at an alarming rate. I found this to be true with my fiances situation. After I ran a intracellular testing on her minerals, which reflects back to a time frame of 3-6 months, I came to see that my hypothesis was not incorrect, but right on target. A simple multivitamin she was taking was not being absorbed within her body and her body was using up certain nutrients faster then others. This had nothing to do with the vitamin brand, but how her body absorbed this particular type. Every individuals body may respond differently to each pill or multivitamin he/she takes. The second test I had ran on her was a 24 hour urine hormone profile. The secret to this test in women is to run it at specific times. For women that are having periods, it needs to be ran during the luteal phase of the cycle (preferable 17-22 days). I know it may be inconvenient for people on the go, but it will be the most valuable test that could save a woman's life. Ill further explain. For women that are on bioidentical hormones, it may give a better understanding of why they may not be responding, or explain further side effects that she may currently have or have had experienced. From these results, I have started her on a program to help her loose weight from finding out the hormonal, nutritional imbalances within her body.
Once the results were in, she felt relieved having answers. She knew her body and knew that something was not right. She was also angered by the fact of how many physicians did not spend the time looking into her situation, but rather just refer her to see a psychologist to deal with stress issues they assumed she had in her life, even after she told them that she didnt, anymore than any human being. I came to find out after having her tested that what may be normal in the blood test, may not actually reflect what is happening at the tissue. The over all results concluded that due to her body being out of balance from the elevated estrogen to progesterone ratio, her estrogen was causing her extreme hair loss and elevated cortisol levels (not shown in the blood test, but in the urine test). Without the proper estrogen to progesterone ratio the thyroid hormone is not getting to the tissue, resulting in hypothyroid symptoms that she has been accruing.
I hope you find this information helpful in your quest for proper weight loss. Another thing that I want to emphasize is why women gain weight as they get older. The explanation is simple, in that it is called survival. Women's estrogen production decreases as they get older and in order to compensate for this, the female body starts to store fat. That is right...you store fat because
this results in the body increasing production of the enzyme called aromatase. Aromatase is the enzyme that converts estrogen from DHEA and testosterone.
We need to make the medical community understand that just examining the thyroid by using standard TSH serum means nothing. In order to get a true reading and functionality of the thyroid, the physician has to examine the Free Hormone Levels vs. the Total. To explain it in an easy way think of it this way:
You have a whole pie which is cut into 8 pieces, then you have to serve that pie to 8 people, unfortunately you can only serve 4 pieces of that pie. What happens? You have 4 other people that will not receive a piece of the pie. This is what is actually happening to your hormones in your thyroid. You may have total number t4 but only a low percentage of it is available to be utilized by your body. Your thyroid produces t4 and t3. One may have a high total number, but your free levels may be low. Another factor physicians need to rule out is what could be blocking the hormone from being activated at the tissue level. Women that have higher estrogen and cortisol levels may produce a hormone called TBG, which can actually block the already low Free Level of thyroid from carrying out their function at the tissue level. To add more insult, the body can start producing antibodies against thyroid hormones again blocking their function at the receptor.
Just recently you have been hearing about adrenal fatigue which 80% of Americans suffer from some degree. The adrenal and thyroid hormones work together. If one of them is not working properly the other one will compensate to some degree. Unfortunately, over time one can not keep up with the other one and eventually it starts malfunctioning. When the body is under stress due to our fast paced lifestyle, even while being on proper thyroid medicine and blood results looking perfect, the body while under tremendous stress for a prolong period of time, may begin producing an enzyme called Reverse t3, which blocks the t3 (hormone responsible for metabolism) from attaching to its receptors site. This response would result in the body slowing down its metabolic rate. The body has a built in mechanism so that if you do not slow down it will do it for you by reducing your thyroid. Synthroid for many people does not work because it is only a precursor for t3 (main hormone). Due to stress, nutrient imbalances, diabetes, the body does not convert the t4 to t3, but rather its inactive form of Reverse t3. The easiest way to think about this is that t3 would be the gas and Reverse t3 is the break. If the person has more then 12 times the amount of Reverse t3 then ft3, the person may have hypothyroid symptoms. Another issue women have to take in consideration is the amount of Ferritin (stored iron) she has. If the Ferritin is not at optimal level for her body, no matter how much thyroid she takes, it will not reach the tissue, which results in hypothyroidism and weight gain.
As you can see there are several factors that determine what optimal thyroid function really is, and it may explain the reason why people despite being told they are "normal", really are not with their lab results. It is also important to view what "normal" vs. "healthy", really is. Every since the physician that I am currently working with, and I, opened a hormone clinic, we have had numerous people come to us sharing with us that their physicians told them them that nothing was wrong with them, and that it was in their head basically. When I hear this I get really annoyed that some physicians are just too lazy and do not take the time to look for the cause of the issue.
I have been watching your show for as long as it has aired. I have been watching your battle with weight through out the years. Now I have the potential to return the favor for all that you have done for women and men across the world with all your generosity and love. I have been helping hundreds and thousands of men and women by donating my time on health boards helping educate people in getting their health back. If Dr. Oz and I could examine factors that may have been over looked by the traditional medical community, you may be able to get the answers that you have been seeking. It would be an honor to help in any way that I can so you could get your health back. No matter how good you eat or workout it will not help you loose weight unless you are in a proper hormonal balance. Women that where put on antidepressants, we have found as patients, were put on them for the incorrect reason, when it was a hormonal imbalance, which was resulting in their depression symptoms. These imbalances were created in the first place by being on birth control. That is another entire issue. You can not fight Mother Nature, but there are ways to bring your body back into natural balance through natural means. By bringing your body back into balance by identifying these road blocks, one can get back their well being.

Sincerely,

Shawn Bean

I certainly hope you succeed in getting Oprah's attention and possibly being able to use her show as a platform to bring this information to the mainstream.

Should you write another letter, I would advise putting the bolded sentence in the first paragraph. You might also offer some statistics on the success of your current practice (how much weight your patients have lost).
