For Those Of You Who Are Wild About Zinc

I just picked this up off from the WorldHealthNet.com website:

Too Much Zinc May Increase
Prostate Cancer Risk

Results of a recent study by researchers at the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) have revealed that men who take too much zinc may be increasing their risk of developing prostate cancer. Dr Michael Leitzmann and colleagues examined surveys filled out by 46,974 male health professionals. Results showed that men who took more than 100 mg of zinc a day had more than twice the risk of advanced prostate cancer, compared with men who did not take supplementary zinc. The recommended daily intake of zinc is 11 mg, however it is thought that at least 10% of men who take supplementary zinc take two-to-three times more than the recommended amount.

However Shippen recommends 50 mg per day for andropausal males. He indicates that the zinc inhibits aromatization. Further, there was at least one study which indicated that 50 mg of zinc in the PM significantly raised test. compared to a placebo. This is the research that led to the commercial developement of ZMA. I've read that this result has never been replicated.

Good points. I believe 50mg is just fine. Also, let's always remember the difference between solving a deficiency and trying to induce further benefit through hyper-supplementation.

How much zinc is in ZMA?

50 mg zinc, 500 magnesium. The later may help with sleep. When I looked at the incredients, I started to purchase them separately for the lower price.

If you are taking a multi vitamin and eating a good diet, you are certainly getting enough zinc.

even if you supplement 50mg zinc a day, its likely with our high meat diets and if your taking a multi that your getting close to 100mg day. i think its enough zinc between the meat and multi. BTW, its a certian type of B vit thats in the ZMA and im not sure if its readily available by itself...

It's B6

Just offset it by taking 5mg proscar everyday for my hairloss. LOL. Secondary benefit less of a chance of prostate cancer.

I hope you really are just joking.

There is no association between DHT levels and risk of prostate cancer, BTW.

I am in contct with agorup of men who now suffer permanent hypogonadism since using (and quitting) finasteride.

Yes, I was joking. On a more serious note, I'd like to get with you on tests. I've been "on" for a very long time and I'm not exactly sure how I should come off to maximize a recovery if possible. How should I go about obtaining you're services? just stop by you're website? On another note I have been taking 5mg proscar for sometime which has stopped my hairloss, but after what you just said scares me I'm just screwing myself more on recovery. Anyway I'd like to talk more about what I've been doing and how I can get myself somewhat back to normal. I'd like to get some blood tests too, as it's been a very long time since I've had any done. I'm kind of scared to see my lipid profile.

Yeah, Ive read the same thing in several articles. Some saying that zinc is so beneficial to your testosterone levels and how necesary it is, and the others saying how it kills your prostate later in life. And believe me the prostate is nothing to mess around with...

raised test levels

Could it be that the zinc is raising test. levels and the raised test. levels is what is increasing the risk for prostate cancer? anyone? stern

Zinc DEFICIENCY leads to increased aromatase activity. But when you take too much, it becomes an oxidizing agent, which generates free radicals, and thus increases the risk of cancer.

Given the fact that I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian, 51 years old, with low free T levels, what kind of zinc supplementation is indicated?

I take this one it is the only one I could find that has copper in it you need to take 2 mgs. of copper for every 50 mgs. of zinc.

Study after study suggests that zinc helps your body heal faster and promotes a healthy immune system. But emerging evidence is also starting to show zinc's usefulness in enhancing prostate health. since zinc is required for normal testosterone and sperm production, it is also essential to a healthy sex life. The problem is that the zinc found in most supplement formulas is difficult for your body to absorb. As you get older, your levels of a special chemical called picolinic acid decrease, making it harder for your body to absorb sufficient amounts of zinc.

I may add I am 54, and whenever I feel a cold or anyone around me has one, I immediately start loading up on Vit. C and Zinc. 30 mg. of zinc 4-5 times per day. Been doing this for as long as I can remember. Knocked out more colds than I can count. Copper deficiency can be a problem, a multi mineral will solve that.

Just my experiences, thought I would post.

Easy way to detect a zinc shortage

A good way to know if you lack zinc in your body: look at your nails. If there are some white spots in the pink area of your nails, you lack zinc. It's quite easy to spot and it's a good marker. (Just a good tip)
