What do you guys prefer and why?

I've used .45 many times and had no problems but want to try .22 although I hear it takes longer to filter and is tougher to push.

.2um EVERYTIME!! You Just have to except the fact that it takes a minute or many for that matter. I don't brew alot so I am content with the syringe filter and a caulking gun. Hang that fucker up and pressurize it every 10 minutes or so and your good to go. Good things come to those who wait... and infections to those who don't.. lol

but what about the guys who do .45 um for years and never had a problem?
That is up to you to decide. There is more risk but it also depends on how sterile your brewing process is. I feel better with a .22 or .20 and make sure it is a sterile filter.

You buy medical insurance for yourself don't you? Would you stop buying it if you didn't get sick for a few years and didn't need a doctor?

The most common screen filter used in compounding is called a "membrane filter." In terms of structure, membrane filters are thin microporous sheets made from a variety of plastics. Membrane filters must have a nominal pore size of 0.22 microns or less if they are to be used for sterilization. However, membrane filters are available in a wide range of pore sizes from 0.11 to 10 microns.
