5 Of The Most Common Mistakes You See In The Gym!

Have you ever asked yourself why your buddies or training partner is adding size, but you seem to gain 5-8 pounds over a cycle (training and steroid) and in order to get that you damn near kill yourself? If you can relate to any degree to this proclamation, you very well be a “hard gainer” — Don’t be afraid, I too am a hard gainer and I think I can help.

While I admit I have trouble gaining and holding substantial muscle mass, I also admit to knowing a thing or two about cheating my genetics and crossing that threshold that the skinny bro doesn’t believe possible. Please don’t assume I am claiming to have a superior intelligence or understanding, I simply have a larger ego and a severe case of bigorexia.

Nonetheless gentlemen…I want to cover some mistakes I have either made myself, or I have seen…oh who am I joking?? These are the ways I’ve fucked up and hindered my gains. Read this list and honestly review your training conduct to see if you are allowing yourself to compromise your optimum gains:

Here are 5 reasons you may not be seeing those rapid gains you were expecting.

1) Do you get the essential hours of sleep?

I don’t mean a 5 hour light sleep, but in my opinion, 7-8 hours of high quality “dreaming you’re a caveman astronaut slumber.” The opinions and results actually do vary from person to person, however, ask any trainer, coach, exercise scientist and I would be astonished if they didn’t express the importance of solid snooze time.

2) I’ll have a number 7 with large fry, large soda,….

My very good friend for years has this obtuse notion that calories are calories. Now, on a strictly literal level he’s correct, but on a practical level he is way, way off. For the sake of analysis let’s say that I eat 4000 calories daily on a lean mass cycle. I eat three 1000 calorie meals and two 500 calorie snacks. I eat nothing but complex carbohydrates, lean proteins and minimal simple sugars….basically I’m eating very clean. My buddy also eats 4000 calories daily, but he eats two fast food meals and two junk food snacks. So he is living on fast food and junk food. I’m going to gain much more quality mass as the majority of my weight gain while he will gain a good deal of fat and sub-q water that will make up the majority of his weight gain.

Ok…I know many of you are shaking you heads and laughing due to the fact that this is simple stuff, but I would venture to say that the fundamentals are usually the first we overlook due to complacency.

3) I’m on 2 grams of AAS weekly, I’m going to grow easy!

If you’ve ever said that…stop reading and kill yourself. If you’ve ever had that thought flash thru your head before going to the gym, well then, you’re pretty normal. Supplements and anabolics are a great aid to a bigger goal but if anything you MUST workout harder when on gear. I hold this theory to be true simply because you can see (while on steroids) the couple weeks you were dedicated or the couple weeks you slacked off. Hey, steroids sometimes make it harder for me to hit the iron…I think because when you are in a constant anabolic state your body is crying for sleep, hence the tired feeling.

4) Four day split, compound and multi joint movements only, and no need for records!

I love the basic, big weight split just as much as the next guy, but after 5-6 weeks you’ve probably stopped gaining and it’s time to adjust your routine. I’m on a 4 day full body circuit right now and I’m gaining muscle and burning the hell out of body fat! If you don’t keep a training log including goals, time of year, diet, etc…you need to start. Simply walking into the gym telling yourself it’s “chest and tri” day but you plan on just winging it….you’ll see it in your gains (or lack there of) :-[

5) Time to determine if you know how to lift truly heavy…some think they do…

You may not know this, but your muscles will not work with full muscle fiber recruitment. It’s up to you to push your skeletal muscles to the point of maximum energy output. By doing this you will have as close to full muscle fiber recruitment as you will ever see….this equals gains in muscle mass! I also suggest negative reps and muscle pre exhaustion –

If you are having trouble with the plateau and are frustrated being stuck at your phase 2 weight then you may be making one or more of these lifting mistakes. There are countless mistakes that can hinder our progress/gains. I’d like to see you guys contribute more mistakes that can effect your training cycle goals…just post them in comments. I too am a hard gainer. At least I used to be. Age is starting to sneak up on me.
The mistake that I made when I started working out was not eating enough. I started at 2000 calories and slowly increase them over time. Once I reached 6500 calories I started putting on weight like crazy. Over a ten-year period I went from 145 pounds up to 235 pounds. I am also 6'1". I never ate junk food or fast food but I can't say that my diet was clean. My diet consisted of a whole package of cinnamon raisin bagels, 6 packages of cinnamon raisin oatmeal, boneless chicken breast, can of tuna, a steak, a whole package of Alfredo noodles and 4 32oz protein shakes made with 2scoops of 100% whey protein and skim milk. that was a gallon of milk a day and I also drank a gallon of water a day along with my vitamins and other supplements (AAS).
So in the end my workouts were extremely intense, I had everything right except for the amount of food to grow. That was my one mistake.
Eat big if you want to get big.
 
I must agree! You cant have it both ways. To gain big you will HAVE to gain some fat as well! Hence - BULKING CYCLES AND CUTTING CYCLES or POST CONTEST - PRE CONTEST...

Exactly! Once you figure out how to manipulate your metabolism via the right cocktail of drugs and cardio you can drop that bulking fat pretty quickly...IMO.
 
Good thread. Should be 5 mistakes for people trying to get to an advanced level. Ive had to do everything youve posted to keep gaining. I like 3 the best. Alot of people think aas are going to make miracles.
 
grate post even after years of training we all do mistakes and sometimes dont even know it ,so it grate to read a post that makes us stop and think about are training habits.even when we get result dont mean we are getting the best results we can get. thanks
 
I learned a long time ago aas is just an aid, but its only one part to the puzzle, and eating is 80% of battle. I dont care how hard you train you will not grow without eating. And vice versa you will become a fat shit if you eat without training.
 
I am guilty of "taking off workouts". I have always been fortunate enough to be able to put on muscle without too much effort. Because of this I will go to the gym and just go through the motions maybe giving 75% instead of 100%. I am only cheating myself and wasting my supplements and money! i think that somdays when you dont feel motivated and dony feel like training that you should just do your trainig wihout going 100% cause for me when that happends somtings i dont do all my set and hate my training. so when this happends now i just do my set with
less weigh and froce less but do all my sets and end up somtime doing more then i though. motiavtion is a big thing when we work all week and have a familly. now when i train i try not to make it an obligation but a fun habbit and thats make me more motivated for the next training. thanks

AAS is a HUGE aid.. Yes an AID correct
80% diet is hard to swallow.. I never diet like a bber and I usually look damn good.

Most new guys in the gym are getting WAY WAY more than enough
calories, and they still can't grow..

I don't even judge guys who carry around their protein shakes
and talk about how many jugs of weight gainer they have to eat every day for muscle gain, anymore..
These guys are packing down the calories while arms go nowhere
and guts are piling on the fat..

Anyway, the most important thing anyone
can do is go to the gym.. followed by the duration and frequency of workouts..

Then get down with some XXL Burritos and
Ben and Jerrys Creamy Vanilla Peanut Chunk ice cream.. I made that flavor up..

I get big natty. Always have. Cut too. Cardio for days. I train for extended periods of high intensity anaerobic "activity". So I really can't relate to most of this doing a set.. waiting forever repeat... To add mass. At 34 I was 224 and 7%. I lifted in the mornings. Most rest between sets.. 15 sec.

Then I'd ride my mountain bike like my ass was on fire on some technical shut 70 to 100 miles a week.

After eating and nap. Go roll with some really feisty heavyweight mma for 2-4 hours.

6', that weight, speed and strength...with endurance. And without juice.

I have nothing in common with guys that want to get big to look big. Take a bunch of "selfies" posing in the gym after a pump. Wooo. Impressive!

I learned the hard way time and wreck less behavior made it hard to be what I was. And that was a genuine fucking beast. That's a hard thing to let go of so.. I tried juice at 37. Sure does make it easy.

Nothing against bodybuilding peeps. I have Friends who do that. I just think it's sad cause its all a load of shit. Just to look like something?. What you can do is more important than what you look like. I would laugh, but I recognize body image problems are recognized mental illnesses. How can I laugh at a huge guy who sees tiny tim? Well I could, but I too nice a fucker to do that. Well I will anyway. Baahaaaha!

Freaks like me. Get old. Then we use drugs because we just want a few more years being godlike.

So do whatever dude, or bro says to gain ten pounds on a cycle... just stop it. Jesus. Save your money. If you can't gain natty. Accept it. I'm sure I pissed off lots of dudes. So let me have it. I'm just so tired of doped up guys staring at themselves all day giving advice. I say get a shrink.

Seems we have a hater in the house. Maybe 6 foot 224 impresses the shit out of the local yokels, but i would bet there are a few guys on here who wouldn't call that impressive. If you think you have won and that you have reached the finish line, then good for you. Myself, i'm going to keep on pushing and using whatever means i can to push my strength goals out a bit further. Congrats on the patting yourself on the back.

Not really. I think the media and supplement companies have brain washed guys to think they have to look a certain way. I mean every month in every rag there's ten "new" moves that will get you giant! Just like the guy on the cover and the models in the mag. All those dudes are doing grams of gear per week.. working on diabetes and everything else. . And it's their job 24/7 to be freaks. So Joe shmoe goes and buy this crap and some of that crap... And keep journals of all the new stuff they just learned from guru "x".

And the exercises/routine and diet? Always something that will change the game forever! Just more regurgitation of regurgitation. Those successful in the gym have a couple things in common that the common man doesn't and no pill or shot or trainer will or can give it to you.

The pharmaceutical gear has the ingredients with percentages if you need extra warm and fuzzy. Jeez.

My long winded point is people should try to be happy with thier natural gifts... whatever they are. If you're just trying to "look" better. You might.. will you be happy?

I say try to "be" better, at whatever. I know this amateur guy.. always looking at himself. Always taking pics of himself. It's kinda fucking weird. It screams "I feel like a little turd inside, please look at me". Fucking sad man

I haven't won shit, devil dog. At stats don't matter too much. 6 225 and skills trumps size any day. An elbow from me? Please. Why more? To carry groceries? Maybe I can replace a fork truck. I've trained with recon and MEU and those guys were fun. Operators from other branches as well. No disrespect for the Marines. But thirteen weeks in boot camp is just the beginning. I've met good friends. .operators.. many tours. I've also met pussies that made it off the island. Really just have to play with them to see if they have anything. .and I'm mostly disappointed.
I'm not saying I have it all together. I have a problem with people trying to be something they are not.

I'm not hating on anyone. Do whatever makes you happy. But if your looks are the driver behind your happiness. .then maybe you're a girl. I Don't know. I can be a good bit heavier if I wanted. But I don't. I joined this forum to learn mostly about body chemistry and aas. Couple of peeps on here seem to know what's up there.
