Acai Berry & Cancer

Scientist Studying Acai Berry
The popularity of the acai berry is growing every day. As a result, more and more nutritionists and scientists are researching its unique nutritional qualities and healing abilities. It was only a matter of time before someone ran experiments regarding the acai berrys ability to fight cancer.

The exciting results of that experiment are below, but first lets cover a few things that may help you understand the acai berrys cancer fighting abilities a little better.
Free Radicals & Antioxidants

Free radicals are nasty little molecules that come from pollutants, pesticides, cigarette smoke, etc. They attack the cells in the body and can even damage DNA. Free radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes.

Your body, of course, has a way to fight back. It does so in the form of antioxidants, which strengthen cells and fight off free radicals.
ORAC Attack

The USDA has a method of measuring the levels of these antioxidants in foods. Its called the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity score (ORAC for short). Where does the Acai berry measure up on this score? Well, it pretty much blows away the competition. Take a look below.
Acai Berry ORAC Score

Its been estimated that 80-90 percent of the worlds population fails to consume even half of the recommended antioxidant intake to fight the free radicals the body encounters in a day. Foods with a high ORAC score (like the acai berry) are worth their weight in gold to the health-conscious person.
Acai Kills Cancer Cells in Lab Study

Now that you know how the acai berry theoretically fights cancer; lets talk about that experiment we mentioned earlier.

The University of Florida published a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that found that acai berries triggered a self destruct response in up to 86% of human cancer cells.

Assistant Professor Stephen Talcott says This was only a cell-culture model and we dont want to give anyone false hope. We are encouraged by the findings, however. Compounds that show good activity against cancer cells in a model system are most likely to have beneficial effects in our bodies. The University will now study the effect of acai antioxidants on healthy human subjects.

Talcott adds A lot of claims are being made, but most of them havent been tested scientifically. We are just beginning to understand the complexity of the acai berry and its health-promoting effects.
The Final Word

While the acai berry certainly isnt proven to cure cancer, exciting research indicates that, at the very least, the high level of antioxidants may help your body fight it. Hopefully further research will reveal more benefits of this amazing food.

The acai berry is a good, natural way to aid in weight loss. Combined with proper diet and exercise, the acai berry will help you lose weight while also giving you the additional health benefits heralded on shows like Oprah. Weight loss is just one of the reasons this berry is being called the number one Superfood. The following sections describe how this superfood will help you to naturally lose weight. :D

Because i am SMHAAAT.

If IF it were possible that the acai bery were an effective way of managing weight, The government would be all over it and finding ways of regulating it !

Second I don't think I have ever seen anything on the OPRAH show that has been proven effective ( not that i watch OPRAH)

The only way to true weight loss is an effective way of eating and proper excercise PERIOD !! Notice I said effective way of eating not DIET ? If you diet you are 99% gauranteed to put the weight back on ! However if you learn to eat properly, you will not only lose weight or gain if that's what you want more effectively, and either keep it off or keep it on !!

Myself I don't wanna eat like a horse my whole life so I eat moderately, enough to maintain my weight at 220lbs my fat stores raise and lower with the seasons, but i have weighed the same for 20 years, with the exception of a few "experiments" at getting to 260 But i didnt like the way I looked. And forget wearing sweatpants and sweatshirts. Do you have any idea what its like to have to buy a pair of 44 in waist and 32 in leg jeans, Just so you can fit them over your quads and glutes ??? IT SUCKS, they look like shit and feel even worse cranking up the belt. Now i am sure there are some guys or girls that can afford to have their clothes tailored me I am not one of em

So believe what you want on the acai berry. But it really is a matter of good eating and excercise ! The rest is marketing aka smoke and mirrors

good luck

How did you know?

Honie, If you are serious about a diet it would be excellent to ahve in the regiment. When you burn fat, or matabolise those cells where all the excess is stored, you are releasing the worst of the worst on your body as their are many nasty things out there that happen to like to store in "fat". So essentially you now have to metabolise everything you have stored, and you are trying to do it all at once. This again, is why moderation always wins. This is the same stuff you would have metabolized before if you burned that much in a day, and at that rate would not be a problem. But now you are trying to do it at once whick will put incredible straign on your entire body. So it would be extremely wise to protect yourself with as many good things as possible while doing this. If Acai is as great an anti-oxidant as they say, it should be awsome foir this all by its self..

Acai (or as the young midwestern saleswoman at Whole Foods calls it, "AH-sah-EEEEE!") is soooo 2006 anyway....its successor in new superfruit hype was goji berries, with mangosteen not far off from megahype. once upon a time, it was noni fruit.

all r very good for you, some tasty (mangosteens rock!), none of them produce miracles...so it's a question of what u can afford. they're all expensive.

Especially if you drink the drinks .. loaded with sugar etc. Some are better than others, but don't believe it helps loose weight. Good Anti-O though!
