Here's some stuff from the page on "Muscular System" from the links on

Amazing Facts

* You have all the muscle fibers you will ever have at birth. Once
damaged they can't be replaced.
* Arnold Shwarzenaeger has just about as many muscle fibers as you
do. They're just thicker.
* There are more than 600 voluntary muscles in the body.
* If all your muscles could pull in one direction you could create
a force of 25 tons.
* Muscles account of 40% of your body weight.

The last one is wrong for most of us! I don't think our organs get as big as our muscles do when we grow. (well, I know one organ that has benefitted-- or has at least been beneficial to some)

For the general population that is true. But for people that lift, especially powerlifters, hyperplasia has been shown to occur in humans.

Only if they are including the intracellular water weight. If they are talking dry weight, then I dont think they are even close.

Very true my friend!

Its been a while since IVe looked at any of the hyperplasia research, but from what I remember, PLers experience a great deal more new fiber growth than do BBers or other lifters. I think the high intensity (%RM) has much to do with it.

so powerlift for 10 years to increase muscle fibers, than become Mr. Olympia :D

I was going to say something similar, too, Bob. There's an article on this site that says something about GH+AS= more muscular fibers. I think that's what it was.
