Any Veterinarian's on Meso???

One of my dogs is suspected of having Cushing disease. The vet needs bloodwork to confirm and script meds for her. Problem is she looses her mind at the vets. When I say looses it, I mean completely looses it. You have no idea how bad she gets. People, muzzles, etc. don't make a difference. She's a crazed dog when we're there and I refuse to make her endure that again. It's terrible.

They used to sedate her for visits, but will not sedate anymore. Basically this leaves me with an unconfirmed cushings patient and no legal way to treat her.

If anyone has real info here, I'd gladly take the advice. Is there any reason for them to withhold sedation for this test?

From what I can tell, the test is to see if the dog has the ability to suppress cortisol. Does a dogs cortisol become effected when sedated? The vet also told us that the meds for cushings will kill the dog if it's not needed. Is this true? I'm having a hard time getting answers that make sense to me, a lot of conflicts regarding opinions.

All her markers to this point indicate Cushings. I'd rather source the meds myself and just go that route after today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm finding sites that say not treating it is no big deal, the dog is in no discomfort. Others say you don't even need to treat it if you don't want. The only big deal is letter old girl out to piss more.

I had sibo and all I can remember is crazy internal pain all the fucking time. My dog is very bloated and her liver side is pushed out from swelling and fluid retention. No way she doesn't feel that.

Her breathing is short, maybe a bit labored, from the extra weight. For a reference, she is 60# when healthy. This disease has added 30# to her, in a matter of months. No good

Very conflicted here. The bloodwork is such a drastic route considering her reaction.

Normally, out of reluctancy, most vets will side against puting senior dogs under anesthesia. I am not a veterinarian but I am a part time breeder. Even the trusted vet I have used for 15 years WILL NOT put a dog under any anesthesia if there are blood pressure or breathing abnormalities unless it’s an emergency situation.

With your pup not enjoying trips to the vet, have you reached out to see if any would be able to make home visits? Could help your girl be calm so she can get the treatment she needs. I sincerely hope you are able to get her taken care of, losing a dog is equal to losing a family member.

It's not a "being at the vet" thing unfortunately. It's her. She's so untrusting, it's unreal. Her life prior to us adopting her was all sorts of bad, another miserable tale of a dog caught in the south east of America during the hurricanes about 8 years ago.

Gabapentin and trazodone was used today. 300mg of each at midnight and 300mg of each at 5am. Appointment at 830am. She was wide awake and fighting from inside of the backseat of our Tahoe. I'll never do that to her again. Those meds did nothing to her. The ability this dog has to fight is unparalleled by basically any creature I've ever encountered.

I'll look at my last bill and find out what they gave her last time. They came out to our truck and she was injected with something, and 10 minutes later she was out cold. They took her blood, rabies and temper stuff was done, her nails clipped. They then gave her an "antidote" if you will. It took her about 10 minutes to come back to reality and stand up. It was so peaceful and easy. When I say every other visit has been 100% chaos from the jump, I swear I mean it. It's so horrible to see.

Hey sorry to hear about your dog. I have never treated cushings disease in a dog but often treat it in humans. Cushings disease can be diagnosed in a number of ways. Two of the most common are bloodwork and ultrasound. Sedation should not affect these. A urinalysis is often used and obviously sedation would impact this but it could be done at home so maybe she would not be as crazed.

The dexamethasone suppression test I am not sure because I have never seen a human be sedated. I would think that it might impact it because you are injecting something and then looking for a response. If the dog is sedated the response but be blunted or not happen at all, however I am not sure to be honest.

The medications such as trilostane which is often used, could in theory kill her in a very very small chance if it were to cause an addisonian crisis in which it lowered her cortisol far too low. Too much medicine could also cause Addison's disease which is essentially the opposite of cushings disease. This is very unlikely though if you start lower and gradually increase.

Anyways best wishes for health to you and your dog. These links may also be of help.

this was the stuff I've been trying to locate but there aren't many resources for this info that I can find. dexamethasone and cortisol changes doesn't seem to be a widely studied topic lol

Thanks for the posts guys, really appreciate it

Hey was just wondering how your dog is doing?

Hope everything is well.

We are doing well. Hope you are safe and sound. Bored out of your mind yet with the self isolating?

She is fat and looks like a furry Hindenburg, we haven't brought her back yet. No clue what to do because of how traumatic it is for her. We've been looking at stuff online like this but a solution with the vet is still in the horizon

She's eating well and moves around, runs and plays outside. Still begging for food too haha.

Thank you for asking. :)

Sounds good!

Yeah, I need the gyms to open back up lol. Some sports on TV would be nice too.

Looks good, sometimes it takes a while to get everything "dialed in" since it can be pretty individual. Hopefully you can find a way to get her in to the vet if you feel you need to in the future. It's good that she is still running and moving around.

Keep me updated, hope everything continues moving in the right direction.

Draw blood yourself? From her and send it in?
I can't find a vet that will accept blood that way. I was hoping they would be ok with that but I'm assuming it's a standard that they can't break due to licensing reasons or something along those lines
