Are heavy deadlifts safe in the long term?

This doesnt pertain to the spine and such, but the stimulation you put on your traps when you deadlift is usually what ends up giving people sleep apnea. I guarantee that anyone who deals with sleep apnea also does heavy compounds that overwork the trapezius muscle

Not my cup of tea. infact i do my absolute best to avoid anything that stimulates the traps, but i cant stop them from growing on roids either way, i can only do my best to minimize their growth

Try doing a workout of heavy farmer carries and shrugs, really beat your traps up, i guarantee youre going to have trouble breathing and sporadic waking when you go to bed later that day

Each to their own, just know that every time you deadlift you are moving one step closer to having to use a cpap machine
I have never considered this before. Why does it give you sleep apnea?

Not saying your wrong at all, it sorta makes sense when I think about it but would be keen to know more… I am guessing it’s just having all that mass and stimulus around your neck area that ‘constricts’ things no?

EDIT: Posted this before reading the entire thread, I have found the answer now. Interesting stuff! Never really gave it much thought before tbh but it makes sense

because when you deadlift 500 pounds youre not holding the weight with your fingers are you? No, you're holding it with your traps so almost the entire deadlift movement is just a very heavy shrug. Even if you tried to "hold" the weight with your biceps or forearms the muscle would tear right off, as seen happen many times

and i call bullshit on people who claim theres no correlation between big traps and sleep apnea, i know for a fact that when i used to do farmer carries i would literally be choking later that night when i was laying in bed trying to sleep and wondering wtf was going on. obviously it was from my traps being pumped up

do you deadlift, are you one of those with sleep issues? just curious
Stopped deadlifting years ago mate. Doesn’t agree with me at all, don’t get me wrong I did it a LOT when I first started to train but I tend to stick with shrugs now etc. had a back injury and deadlifts just became impossible to do properly after that.

My traps are big and although I don’t have a CPAP machine, it’s fair to say I can snore quite a bit, been kicked out of bed by the wife more than once.

Maybe it is something I need to investigate further

I mean i would just train lats more instead of traps instead, i feel like traps get worked enough through other exercises anyways, you know? shit even doing biceps curls is gonna work ur traps

Tbh I don’t feel it’s necessary to train traps directly anyway, I mean I do it once a week but that’s just out of habit really. Most of the time your hitting them in other exercises anyway

man my traps grow just from carrying grocery bags. i think i have the trap genes of zeus or something. its fucking annoying. i dont want them to grow, stay small please

Agreed. I'd rather keep as much neck as I can... I don't care if they thicken. just not rise anymore

i look worse the bigger my traps are, it also detracts from my shoulder width. overall id prefer zero traps growth, but its a struggle

It's true sometimes you watch a person make a movement in such a way that he should have been injured a long time ago. But no, he progresses and progresses and is not injured. Apparently nature endowed him with a strong organism.
Maybe it's the peculiarities of the technique. The standard postulates do not always suit everyone. For example, if we consider Konstantin Konstantinov and his deadlift with a barbell, as well as his unusual underpinning in movements

Yes, Konstantinov is an example of genetic talent and natural strength, but at the same time, with such a position of the back, he always held it rigidly and there was no dynamics. Those. in this position he could hold her firmly.

But I'm afraid for newcomers, someone may watch too much and start repeating. I remember when I was training myself, there was Lorenzo Becker. Many of us watched his videos and started training in the same style. I'm not even talking about ST and his biceps work, it was a real thrill. But at the same time, I do not deny the search for my own and the pluses for myself.

You know why I like you bro? Your consistency. On any and all factual statements that you make, you are consistently wrong.

What is your goal with lifting? Do you have any current or recurring injuries? What is your comfort level with GOOD deadlift form?
Yes

Do you have previous injuries that would prevent you from doing them safely?
Fortunately, so far so good. Just getting ready for a powerlifting performance. If all goes well, I plan to perform in the fall. The only goal is to become a master of sports without the use of steroids. To be clean all the way through training. After that, I'll start using

If you want to powerlift you better get really fucking comfy with lifting heavy weights. You also need to make sure your form is great if not impeccable.

Yup if you plan on powerlifting you will have to deadlift heavy on the regular. Keep your form good to try to prevent any injuries. Good luck with your meet. When is it?
