I have to agree with Mill there. That's actually what my thoughts on the matter are. A guy believes what he is taught to believe.
You're right, also. There is no real penalty for not believing the Eastern philosphies. I use philosophies because, in essence, that's what they are. Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and Hinduism are philosophies which were subsequently perverted and twisted into religions.
The only "penalty" associated with not living a proper Hindu life is that one is "condemned"LOL to an infinite cycle of rebirth into this world.
I had an East meets West course a couple of semesters ago. I always wanted to argue with the teacher. Actually, I did quite frequently, but she claimed that religions where you die and go on to an eternal afterlife were a cop out. Personally, I view reincarnation as a bigger cop out. No one wants to leave this existence because of the fear of the unknown. Believing that, for hundreds of lifetimes, you will live on earth and then eventually reach Nirvana and total nothingness sounds much more appealing than eternal servitude to me.

There are hundreds of religions with more history than Christianity, Bob. And, no religion is deeper rooted in scientific fact.
What's the difference between a religion that believes the geography of Earth is caused by the war between the Gods and the original giants(more or less quick and semi-accurate paraphrasement of Odinism) and one in which the Earth is the way it is because some guy made it that way?
Neither is proveable or, currently, disprovable.
Hell, if we follow that line of logic, who's to say that Paul Bunyon really didn't create the grand canyon by dragging his axe across the ground when he was depressed?
