Atenolol and hair loss

So, I was perscribed atenolol 25 mg (tenormin) 1 year ago for anxiety related hypertension. I was in a contolled setting (2400 calorie diet, no alcohol, no drugs, and no other pills). After about 3 months I started to notice that after I had my haircut I could see my scalp. It's totally even over my entire head. I'm 26 with no immediate relative in the last 4 generations to have male pattern baldness. I stopped taking atenolol 2 weeks ago and already see an improvement. Just want to know if anyone else had this problem.

Although I located a few case reports of "hair loss" in some who were prescribed Atenolol, no clear link has been established bt Beta blockers and premature baldness. Nonetheless discontinuing antihypertensive therapy has far reaching consequences compared to hair loss.

Let your Doc know as there are many anti-HTN meds well worth a go, esp when contrasted to the adverse effects of Beta blockers in MALES with HTN.

Oh and since you posted this question on a PED forum, any reasonable fella would be foolish not to ask the OBVIOUS QUESTION, what Anabolic agents are you "cycling" using as "TRT", or "supplementing" ect? That also would include "pro-hormones"

Doc, isn't a beta blocker a bit extreme for a 26 year old unless he has an arrhythmia or some other condition that adds to his risk level?

Thank you for the good advice regarding discontinuation and consulting a doctor. As soon as my insurance cards come in the mail I'm headed to the doctor. I was getting light headed everytime I stood up towards the end of my use so I kind of jumped the gun and thought my bp was fine, if not too low. In my prison my bp was constantly 150/ 88. Mostly stress about getting out I think.

I've never cycled anything before. I'm reading up on other's personal experience before I do anything.

I just have bad anxiety. Thats why I was put on atenolol. Was on clonazepam, alprazolam, and multiple ssri's but I use to drink on them which is obviously not good.

I'm on atenolol for anxiety as well. It is used off label to treat performance related and social anxiety because it doesn't allow your heart rate to spike and keeps the rythym steady. I've been on it about a year now but I haven't noticed any hair loss. My doc said it's been on the market for decades and is safer than psych drugs. He starts all his adult patients on it before trying the harder drugs.
