Bio-identical hrt whats the deal with it?

Recently my parents read a book about hrt by Suzanne Somers about HRT. In the book I am told she basically says that HRT needs to be done utilizing bio-identical hormones to be truly effective.

This is the first I have heard about anything like this as I have always thought synthetically derived test is the same in our bodies as natural test, aren't they the same on the molecular level? If not I wonder what this approach would suggest using?

Can anyone clear this up for me, I'm not at all convinced this is the case and I like to understand things.

Doctor Swale, if you run across this and could respond I would appreciate your wisdom. My mother set up an appointment with Dr. Smith but canceled it because she was told she does not practice bio-identical HRT. I'd like to know if you see any truth to this line of thinking as this is the first I have heard about it.

This a warning against synthetic HRT (mainly in reference to menopausal women). The following article should shed light on the issue for you and your parents.

With all due respect, what the hell is anyone doing getting HRT advice from Suzanne Somers?

Well I did say I did not believe this is the case. She is actually an intelligent person and has devoted a lot of time researching this area. Most of her information comes from some of the top doctors in the field.

Have you seen her lately?
She was born in 1946 I think this makes her 58 years old. I'd say she knows a little something about HRT/ life extention.
This is a current picture of her, I thinks she looks pretty good for 58 eh?

:D

I read that article and it seems to defend what she says in her book.

She's developed an enviable business empire off her name. She deserves all the credit for that.

And she made someone think critically about HRT and raised good questions about bio-identical hormones.

It's just sad that celebrities are raising these issues and have more clout than doctors or researchers.

Agreed, I would just like to know if there is actually and merrit to this line of thinking, if so, why is it's practice uncommon?

My guess is that pharmaceutical companies do not make money from bio-identical HRT. They make a lot more selling Premarin. Since most doctors get their information about drugs from the pharmaceutical companies, the doctors prescribe what they're told is best. And this may not always be validated.

Your mother cancelled an appointment with the pre-eminent (IMPO) female Anti-Aging doctor in the country because she "heard" something about her?

I would not have recommended Dr. Pamela Smith if I did not believe in her. I hope Dr. Smith will graciously accept her back.

Dr. Smith indeed practices bio-identical HRT.

The issue, with respect to women's health, has to do with the widespread practice of employing estrogen extracted from horse urine, and synthetic progesterone (for those females who still have their uterus). Equine estrogen (usuallyb prescribed at toxic dosage) increases ther risk of serious disease. Bioidentical estrogen, basically does not.

Progestins (synthetic alternate forms of progesterone) are vasoconstrictors, so it is no surprise they increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Natural progesterone is a vasodilator. thus these risks are not there.

I really think Ms. Somers has done us all a lot of good through her efforts. Popularizing these topics informs the population, so they ask their physicians about their medical care, and also learn to seek out those who practice according to the latest developments. The conventional medical community is not being trained appropriately, IMPO.

Actually the appointment was never actually made, (well it was for about 30 seconds before he cancelled it after asking about bio-identical treatment, same phone call)
My dad called her secretary with the intentions of making an appointment. She told him Dr. Smith did not practice bio-identical HRT so he never actually made the appointment for her.

I think the Dr should have a chat with her aides because they are giving out false information about her treatment methods.

I would not have sent my own mother to anyone you recommended if I did not respect your opinion, which I indeed do.
My dad did not know what to do when he called and was told by her own staff that she did not do bio-identical HRT so he did not make the appointment. Sorry for the confusion, I worded my first statement incorrectly.

She now has an appointment with her the first of next month.

Is your mom as hot as Suzanne Sommers? :D jk bro. Whatever Suzanne is doing, whether it be cosmetic surgery, exercise, or hormones, its certainly working for her. And good family genes certainly make it all much easier.

lol no that would be a tough act to follow! I agree she looks great and has probably used a combination of all of the methods you have mentioned but damn if it is not working for her.

Actually I think I messed up and had my mom make an apointment with the wrong Dr Smith, I sent an email to Dr. Crisler to clear things up.

You want Dr. PAMELA Smith, MD.

She may be contacted via the Physician Locator at A4M:

www.worldhealth.net.

Unfortunately, she and I only had a few minutes to visit last month at the A4M conference in Vegas. She thanked me for all the ladies I sent to her. I told her I was doing the patients a favor!

You could not find a better Anti-Aging Medicine physician for females, IMPO.
