IFBB pro bodybuilder Luke Wood did NOT die as a result of anabolic steroids; he died as a result of hospital neglect according to his family.

Wood had a kidney transplant operation on August 20, 2011. He was discharged from the hospital on August 26, 2011 even though he was showing signs of rejecting the transplant as well as evidence of internal bleeding. Wood died at 11:40pm on the operating table from cardiac arrest due to massive internal hemorrhaging during emergency surgery.

Wood's family members and fiancee Nora Haddad blamed the hospital and demanded an investigation. Haddad claims that Wood was "neglected" and received "inadequate care" at Sydney's Westmead Hospital.

"There was not enough care, he was black and bruised, he was bleeding for five days," Haddad said. "Nothing was done about it...

"Steroids is not what killed him. It was the kidney transplant is what's killed him."

"Obviously there's something that's happened that they're trying to hide and we just want the truth to come out."

An inquest into Wood's death is ongoing.

Below is reporting of some of the testimony from the inquest.

The court heard Mr Wood was classified as a category two triage patient when he went to hospital in August, 2011.

He was meant to be seen within 10 minutes upon arrival due to the potentially life-threatening nature of his injuries. A CT scan was ordered about 3.40pm by emergency department registrar Dr Sambanthar Muralitharan and marked as urgent.

But Mr Wood was sent to a different part of the emergency department at 5pm and the scan did not start until 6.26pm.

Doctors were not told about the results until at least after 7pm.

The court also heard that full medical records with "the relevant renal notes" were locked in a room, preventing access by the medical staff trying to save him.

Later, one of the anaesthetists who treated Mr Wood said he had not been aware of his long-standing heart problems or his "extreme musculature" when doctors undertook an emergency laparotomy shortly before his death.

Another treating anaesthetist, Dr Bryne John, said that she had wanted to use an arterial line on Mr Wood to consistently monitor his blood pressure but had been told not to do so by another doctor.

"The doctors didn't think the bleeding was that bad," Dr John said.

The inquest heard that when the surgeon subsequently cut into Mr Wood's abdomen "litres" of blood-like fluid poured out.

Good friend that I have known and trained with on and off for 25 years was just diagnosed with stage two kidney disease.

He has not ran a cycle in four years, but he did a lot in those years leading up to his stoppage. But he "cycled" far as I know, never cruised. His diet was okay. One caveat; he did consume a lot of "energy drinks" and ephedrine type drugs. I am sure that had something too do with it also.

I've heard many rumors of issues spawning from people drinking two or three energy drinks a day at work, from intestinal to kidney - not sure the validity but it wouldn't suprised me

I have had two friends hospitalized in the early 2000's. Both doctors told them that it was directly related to Monsters and redbulls and da da da energy drinks.
just google: energy drinks and kidney disease.
Take care.

I know some guys love the stuff but I hated ephedrine. Made my heart race when doing any kind of lifting, tried to deadlift using it once and I felt like my heart was going to explode and was dizzy to the point of not being able to see straight. Never touched the stuff again. Not sure that it has any effect on the kidneys but it wouldn't surprise me. That shit made me feel real uncomfortable.

As a follow up to this thread, I wanted to post the official findings of the inquest into the death of Luke Wood by the State Coroner's Court of New South Wales (Deputy State Coroner Magistrate Sharon Freund) from November 2014. The PDF is attached for those who are interested.

"Luke Wood died on 31 August 2011 at Westmead Hospital as a result of an intraperitoneal haemorrhage from an anastomotic leak from a transplanted renal artery...

"I think it prudent to comment, so far as it is relevant, on Luke’s use of steroids. Luke was a professional body builder who trained intensively and abided by a strict diet however, his extreme musculature was consistent with the use of steroids. Luke did admit to the use of steroids to at least some of his treating medical practitioners...

"As stated by Counsel Assisting at the outset, this inquest was not about the use and abuse of steroids. However, during the investigation undertaken in preparation for the inquest, some of the independent medical experts consulted by the Court were asked whether steroid use and Luke’s extreme musculature were relevant factors in relation to his care and treatment. Expert opinion received for this inquest revealed inter alia that such use would not have impacted on Luke’s suitability for the kidney transplant surgery. There was also evidence before me that high protein diets and anabolic steroid use are known risk factors for developing chronic renal failure. I also note that Luke had focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (“FSGS”) and that his high protein diet and hypertension would have accelerated his progression toward end stage renal failure."

Also, I wanted to note that health report Rose Brennan of The Daily Telegraph (Australia) was forced to issue a retraction and apology for inaccurately blaming anabolic steroids for the death of Luke Wood in a recent October 25, 2016 article:

A previous version of this article made reference to bodybuilder Luke Wood, stating that a coronial inquest found that steroid use contributed to his death in 2011. The Daily Telegraph accepts that this was incorrect and apologises to Mr Wood’s family.

Unfortunately, The Daily Telegraphy did not retract the entire article featuring negative portrayals and fearmongering of steroids.

Source: Dead bodybuilder neglected by hospital, fiancee says

What his fiancée is likely describing is DIC (Disseminated IntraVascular Coagulation) and has MANY causes including ACUTE Transplant Rejection and Sepsis.

Noting Millards last post another cause of DIC is MULTIPLE TRANSFUSIONS, which someone may need when they are "bleeding out".

Were AAS the proximate cause of this gents demise probably not, but they certainly may have contributed bc AAS are known to worsen HTN which Luke clearly had, as it was stated to be the primary reason for his ARF.

The point: the use of AAS esp at high doses can be risky business IME.

One should weigh the "risks and benefits" VERY CAREFULLY IMO

Finally rest assured complaints of negligence on behalf of RELATIVES
of the deceased or disabled BB is one of several reasons why almost any physician will distance themselves from recommending and certainly prescribing AAS to any patient.

I only mention the latter bc although we often state the use of AAS is an "individual decision", many overlook the impact such a decision can have on others in ones life.

And such fearmongering never stopped the select few from using recreational drugs either.

So what's wrong with the damn truth and publicize the risk of AAS in a legitimate manner?

Ah who would read THAT when it's a well known fact sensationalism sells!
