Boxer's Phy...

Do Boxers do high volume workouts. Alot of them have great biceps, and
have that V taper. What training do u guess think they do?

Less from the weights than the actual boxing itself.

On our boxing day, it's hit shitloads of mitts and do assloads of crunches and pushups inbetween rounds on the mitts.

the v taper u se on boxers has more to do with low body fat and hence small waists.

Biceps are shaped rather than big due to keppinng hands in boxing position and also punching and bringing back hands to head.

Shoulders due to boxing being like 90% shoulder strength.

Boxers do very little weights other than light high reps. Try boxing for a couple of motnhsand ul get that shape - if thats what ur after.

90% shoulder strength? edit: I'll leave it with that's terribly incorrect, but I can't say anymore without being a dick, so I'll leave it at that.

Boxers do chins and pull ups. That should explain the v-taper and biceps. Also, boxers now a days are using weights. Holyfield was a bigtime lifting weight proponent.

Alot of their training is trying to be functional for boxing, and the after result is their physiques. They do alot of heavy bag work, speed work, plyos, bodyweight exercises, running, etc.

Well, ill finish off where you left off. If it is 90% shoulder strength, you could not do crap with that. If you really knew about punching power, it is your whole body developing the power to do the punching. It really is from the hips, waist and legs. Yeah, you can do a jab, but no jab aint going to knock you out. try this test. Sit down next to your partner. Without rotating your waist, punch him in the face. Your shoulder strength will be enough to just piss him off. Now, both of you stand up. Now, let him punch you, while having him drive off his power from his legs, through his hips, and then the rotational torque of his waist, delivered at the same time to your chin. All, I can say is, "you got knocked the fuck out!!"

Another example, lets examine Bruce Lee's famous one inch punch, if you ever saw it demonstrated, you would see that he used his whole body to deliver the punch. It was not just from shoulder strength alone.
If it was just from shoulder strength, it would just be a one inch tap.

Yeah, what he said. LOL It's funny you mention the seated punch thing, Juggernaut. I was going to use that as an example today, too.

You develope the V from being lean and the very stong back you must have to help generate power and stability. As far as lifting weights and boxing it all depends on your trainer and philosphy of benefits and negatives that lifting can have on your sports performance. When I use to fight we didnt really lift much until the summer , which was when you didnt really have many fights, and then you would get ready again for basically the more active part of the season and hopefully with a little more muscle and power.

ok, ok, 90% is an exxageration. the point im trying to make is that boxers use there shoulders at all times.

The only weights majority of boxers do over in europe is mailnly lite ones.

Having boxed in UK and in USA the main diff is u guys lift more weights in the usa than wat we do in uk and in particular heavy weights.

But the physiques are similar due to wat they do in the ring. Nd on the bags.

Boxers biceps are toned and have shape because they are kept contracted to keep the hands up.

If u want a boxers physique -whatever that is as they differ- then do some boxing and prioritise ur shoulder training. But light with reps. WE also do alot of cleans actually.

It depends. A lot of them do lift nowadays. You have the Roy Jones and Holyfield types. The lighter weight guys might not so that they don't jump their weight class. Then you have all the fat ass heavyweights. don't even get me started on the terrible state of boxing these days. Anyway, back in the day when I boxed the old trainers said no weight lifting because "it makes you tight." That old dogma is still around and you don't contradict the old gray haired guy with the flattened nose. I still box on my own for the cardio and enjoyment of it. If you ever take it up you'll see that your biceps will be very sore the next day. Biceps are used alot in all punches. It's also great for ab work. Plus, boxing just looks bad ass and cool. It's great for practical self defense too. Just learn some wrestling too.

You may be a little intimidated to go into a real boxing gym. They're kinda rough. I would recommend getting a good how to video or even taking a cardio boxing class if one is around. You can learn some basic foot work and how to trow a jab and cross and bob and weave which is 95% of boxing. Good luck

Im surprised that no one has mentioned that the vast majority of boxers have pipecleaner arms. Tyson probably has some of the biggest bis in boxing and his are only like 16 1/2 or 17.

There is so much misinformation on this thread, i'm not even going to comment because I don't think it'd do any good.

go for it komt.

I think that there is no such thing as a boxers physique, we are all diff.
basic, developed shoulders, strong abs. thats it really. being muscle bound serves no purpose .Being able to bang does. And being able to bang quickly with quick hands definitely does. so i guess we can figure it out from there. Also being able to take a shot to the body is very important.

My head hurts now

to answer your questions simply they do alittle bit of everything but basically it all comes back to the basics of boxing and that being the reason they have the physiques they do....and i will agree there is entirely way to much misinformation on this thread............
