Briefs for squats and tears, whats the power transfer to raw??

Never lifted equipped in my life. Powerlifting friend keeps recommending briefs. I've read some minimal information on how once you wear them and get used to handling the heavier work weights it will still transfer over in power output if you don't lift with them, providing you don't just use them as a crutch. Any truth to that?

For example, 600 lbs seems to be the difficult marker to move past for me. Whether it's a squat or deadlift 600 seems to be the point Ive always had a hard time breaking. Im wondering if that's possible to break with some sort of added protection to keep hips tighter , and if getting used to it would transfer over when I went back to lifting unequipped. Maybe they'd help with back development and traps since I'd be handling more lbs possibly

I had to start using squat briefs due age and hips starting wear down. I didn't get the tightest fit briefs so that I would be able to get them on myself or with squat suit slippers. I have a pair that are snug and a pair that are a little loser for when I bulk.

If you want them to transfer over to your raw squat, I would suggest that you stay away form getting them to tight. It will change your movement pattern. Get them tight enough to give some support but not tight to the point you will need to others to help you squeeze into them.

It will transfer over well. I have metal jack briefs.

I've heard that sizing properly can be an issue. Guys saying they ordered the right size based on the chart and couldn't get them over their knees. I'll have to look around for awhile. I heard metal is a good brand. Thanks for the input

You're welcome. Yep sizing is a bitch at first. I gave eliteFTS my measurements and they said I would need a 42. I also explained to them that I am a raw lifter and only planned on using them 1-2 every a month. That I wasn't looking for a competition fit.

When I got the size 42 I could't get them on by myself. I sent them back and got a 44 and a 46 for the times when I bulk up and won't fit into a 44. I would definitely size up from what your measurements might put you at. Worst case scenario you will just have to send them back for a size up or down.

You will definitely get some carry over to your raw lift as long as you don't go competition tight. Competition tight will change you're groove completely. If you where the briefs all the way up and put a belt on forget it. You will be hitting numbers in those briefs that were once a 3 rep max for sets of 8.

For me that was the key for getting them to carry over for me. anything that was a 3 rep max I would do 8 reps. My 1 rm I would be able to hit 3-5 reps for a few sets. Worked like a charm this training cycle.

WOW! Maybe i need to look in to them?!?!?
I want that 495 FS.
That much of a difference huh?

Very little carryover in my experience. You'll Squat fine in them, and your ability to Squat in them will improve over time. However it will not train your ability to go deep with maximal weight, that part of the lift will essentially be 'supported' by the briefs.

Take the briefs away and you're in the same spot, or worse.

@franchise24 has a different experience to mine, so try them out for yourself imo.

Interesting post. My PL days are mostly behind me but this piques my interest a little.

There is little carryover to normal squat from squatting in briefs. It can kind of act as a weak overload, kind of like squatting in wraps when you're a raw squatter but I never found it to help me much.

Franchise is right though, if you don't plan on lifting equipped, then you don't want a super tight brief. I used them mainly for hip health as the compression would help prevent some displacement in the hips.

That's another big reason I was looking into them. After hemorrhoid surgery I'm a little gun shy about going so heavy all of the time. That and hip health as well. I was thinking that if my body became used to more weight load then maybe some other muscles would develop despite wearing briefs once in awhile. I certainly don't wanna rely on them as a crutch though

But that path is no more advantageous than just simply working up in a controlled progression scheme to allow other muscles to develop. Using them for hip health is one thing, but I don't think they're going to be helping you much at all in terms of allowing other muscles to develop bc the reason you'd be squatting a little bit heavier is the briefs, which means the briefs are masking a weak point and not allowing it to develop the same as if you didn't use briefs.

Didn't think of this one, thanks for the input

The briefs have helped tremendously with hip health for me. Like @Docd187123 stated no carryover for him. But I have gotten some. I know @Perrin Aybara gets great carryover from box squats. I never did.
