I don't think it's a stick in the mud just a different outlook. My personal take on it is if you're an adult it should be your choice as long as you're not directly hurting anyone else. I prefer choice and personal accountability over laws if you're not hurting anyone else.

I'm referring moreso to addicts than dealers, not that the drug war has prevented dealers from dealing any more than it has prevented addicts from being addicts.

One of the biggest problems with the drug war is treating addicts like criminals. Do you think a heroin junkie gives a shit if they are breaking the law when they use? No. They are an addict... And as hard as it is for those who have never suffered from addiction to understand - they have a sickness that they cannot help themselves from. Treating them like a criminal doesn't help them...

Some do respond to being put in prison... But then they have a record that follows them for the rest of there life they can never quite get away from.

How about hold the charges over them to complete a mandatory program. Would that be effective? Serious question for your opinion. I'm not sure how that would work because I would guess you would need to want it to succeed.

I've been down the drug path when I was younger I was just fortunate enough to be able to just stop the same way I did with booze.

It might be effective at the time... But probably not in the long term.

It's also probably unnecessary... You look at some other countries that are finally acknowledging that they have a disease to treat rather than a criminal to target. They are giving these people clean needless and a safe place to use drugs. Sounds fucking crazy right? But upstairs they have people getting clean and getting well. These facilities have actually gotten the addicts to come to the place that gets them clean. If they OD, they are revived. They can't spread disease as easily. They can get tested, educated etc etc etc.

Now, compare a system like this to the threat of prison time in the US.... I really think other countries are on the right track.

The problem is that you are thinking of legal crimes as moral issues related to the subjectivity of the criminal.
