MMA fighter Chael Sonnen was previously given permission to use TRT by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). NSAC changed its mind and banned TRT.

So, Sonnen quit TRT so he could continue fighting. But he naturally decided to do PCT to restore his body's HPTA.

The problem is -- and Sonnen knew it -- that all the drugs typically used in PCT -- Nolvadex, Clomid, hCG -- are also banned by NSAC, USADA, WADA, etc.

There is a defense to be made here in the name of health, but Sonnen does a piss-poor job of making it.

He attempts to defend himself but fails miserably in a woefully ill-informed rant about anti-doping rules in the following video clip. Ignorance is no defense to doping violations. Yet Sonnen pretends to be clueless about some of the rules that are most obvious to competitive athletes. I've written more about it here. You can also watch the video:

He announced his retirement tonight as well. Sad to see the sonnen era come to an end, but it's probably good timing. While he's still the only undefeated champ in UFC history. It's been a hell of a fun journey to watch, and a special part of fighting history :D

Nice to see you back noah!!

Did he really retire? I guess he didn't think it was worth going on with low test levels..

Good to be back! :D But a hell of a lot to catch up on.. hope too much hasn't changed unless for the better !

Only a couple of hours ago on Fox. I think it's well timed! He finally managed to get on the road to being a father, and now that TRTs done and over with... it was already kind of a surprise he decided to continue his career without it. But then the PCT was his undoing in a random test. So! Instead of appealing / getting suspended and trying to get re-licensed some time later only to come back older and without TRT, this seems a pretty good option.

Chael Sonnen tested positive once again during a second drug test administered less than two weeks after the failed anti-doping test for clomid/arimidex that led to his retirement. This time he was also caught with hGH, EPO and hCG in his system in addition to arimidex.

AFter the first test, Sonnen (plausibly) suggested that clomiphene and anastrozole (and hCG) were used for PCT to help him "transition off TRT" to restore his own testicular function so that he could compete and have children.

The PCT defense largely goes out the window given the additional prohibited substances he was using, particularly EPO.

Was a pretty busy day with little time for tv so I'd only just caught wind of this. It bums me out more than I'd expect, I'm not a guy with many sports heroes.

With the first drug test, dodgy explanation, breaking rules though somewhat understandable given the odd nature of abrubtly ending TRT... you can leave with your reputation fairly intact as you retire and move to fatherhood. But then you have this

Wonder how Fox will react, puts them in an odd bind. But Chael has a habit of coming back against steep adversity against the odds (fighting suspension, losing real estate license, getting a felony and resigning office all at once). Maybe luck runs out this time

Some QOTD

Chael is just trying to help clean up MMA by taking all the drugs himself

Who does he think he is? Lance Armstrong (sans championships)?

Ah well.

Was a running joke. Even after the first loss to Silva he'd claim to be undefeated and undisputed, with a fake belt and all :D "16 years later still not a blemish on my face… Or my record"

lolol my bad Noah i thought you were serious considering you have a pic of him as your icon lawls

I think that's being way too harsh on the guy, just because he's the one that got caught. He was very fun to watch fight.

For the first 2 drugs from the first test result -- yes. And that was his story at the time, which went over well enough for a failed drug test. The second test results showed EPO and HGH which couldn't be excused the same way

Chael will be back. Once this all blows over and a big name fails a test to take some heat off him. He seemed like a genuine guy
