Chronically high creatinine

Hi guys,

Im 28 years old and for a few years i've had elevated creatinine levels. I have done a kidney ultrasound test in the past, and everything seemed to be a-ok, except some sand in the kidneys.

For the past 2 months i have trained less intense, and the only thing i used was 100mg of test cyp per week. I did a test today, and the creatinine was elevated again. It was 129 umol/L, with a normal range 53-106.

What can i do? Should this concern me?

If you've had a kidney ultrasound done, that would imply there's a doctor working with you on it. I'd probably go by what the licensed medical doctor have to say in regards to these questions as opposed to some guys on an internet forum

How many days off did you take prior to the test?

I can hammer a hard leg day and get a test done the next day and be 3X above the range. On the same note, I can take 4-5 days off from the gym and test within range.

It doesn't matter what I do - break from training, lower protein intake, avoid blasting, my creatinine is always high and my eGFR always low (40s).

I got a referral to a nephrologist (which is what I suggest you do if ypu haven't already). A kidney ultrasound and uranalysis was ordered. Both tests came back fine. Nonetheless, I pressured the doc into giving me a cystatin-c test, which is probably the most accurate estimation of GFR for us kinda folk.

eGFE calculated via cystatin-c was like 117 or something?

So yeah, I'd follow the route I took. And try not to worry yourself.

This.

Training and muscle tear increases protein breakdown, that needs to be excreted via the kidneys making them work hard.

If you want ACCURATE blood test on ANYTHING, abstain from training for 4 days minimum.

As others mentioned you want a Cystatin C test ordered. Simple blood test that will give you a good idea of kidney function/dysfunction. It's not affected by weight, muscle mass, or protein breakdown like BUN/Creatine test. To get an actual GFR you need to look at blood pressure, age, weight, BUN/Creatinine, a urine test for protein, and a cystatin c.

I've had my creatinine at 1.3 for the last 10 years or so and my primary at the time scared me into thinking i was in stage 3 kidney failure due to the "eGFR". I was shitting my pants waiting for the specialist appointment. She ran the above mentioned tests and gave me a actual GFR of 110 which is good. My cystatin c was 0.7 and the range is 0.5-1.2..whew..what a relief.

Long story short: get tested and then formulate a game plan with your PCP if actual kidney dysfunction is verified. Best of luck sir.

Hello. How much protein do you have per day?
How much water do you drink a day, does that make a difference?
Are you taking any diuretics?

Nothing bro. Normal diet, not even high in protein.

Before the last test i drank around 5L of water and still came in at 118 with the upper limit of 106.

I went down this route too saw the kidney specialist and everything. Conclusion was that might just be my normal because of the amount of muscle I have. I get blood work every 6 months to make sure the levels about the same.

Hmm, yes, strange things. I think it is necessary to have an ultrasound of the kidneys and the urinary system.
