CNS Overtraining

I have always seemed to have a poor CNS endurance when it comes down to weight lifting. I've been working with the 5x5 and loving it, but today I started off doing squats. I felt like complete crap the whole day, and when I got into the gym I felt like I wasn't mentally all there. I did two sets of Oly Squats and then called it quits....ready to punch someone in the face.

What can I do to help stop or at least slow down the occurence of CNS overtraining? My workouts usually last ~1.5hrs, sometimes a little longer. I was thinking of changing it to a 4x5 routine, and cut out squats on Wednesday....simply, it is no longer the 5x5 routine. Do you feel that this will help, or will it not yield much difference? Should I change to higher reps, less sets?

This occurred during DFHT as well, just as fast. Cut down on the volume by quite a bit and CNS OT was cut back significantly. I really like the concept and layout of the 5x5 routine however, what good is it if my CNS is fried and I can't even get up to workout?

Thanks for any helps folks.

Alot of guys would tell you to lower the frequency of your workouts but some guys here may tell you to increase it
:) .. how long have you been doing the 5X5

I have the same problem. Doing 5x5 and I feel like shit in gym. I'm in week 4, and I feel like my strenght decrease (I can't do oly squat with full range of motion). I also can't focus with my mind on workout. Bench is ok for now.

This would be about my 6th week. Decrease from 3x/wk workouts? I could see some benefit in increasing frequency, but decreasing volume per workout being somewhat effective....but maybe not....

Try a deload- use the weights from your last week and instead of 5x5 do 'em 3x3. Then the next week bump 'em up (the weights) and keep it at 3x3. Do this til you feel burnt out again, then switch programs or start a new 5x5 run with conservative poundages and build again.

A few weeks ago I got like that. I was doing the intensity phase and then it was like hitting a wall. I starting feeling tired and failing on all my lifts but deads (thought that was weird). I figured fatigue was catching up with me so I totally rested the next week. The week after the rest I felt better and was back to business as usually.

Deloading phase is in order.

Quoting Bob Smith--
"In general, a full 5x5 cycle will look like this:
4-6 weeks of 5x5, followed by 2-4 weeks of 3x3. Repeat."

I used to workout hard every day for weeks until i couldn't take anymore then i'd take a week off and not only did i gain size but my strength went up when i got back in the gym. Alot of people do this,i just thought i'd share my story with you :-) ..

It's been a week since you posted this, so hopefully you've heeded the advice, and you're feeling better. I just wanted to add, that if you are using any thermo's for any reason, cut them out as well. They will tax the CNS dramatically as well.
