Consuming Heavy Metals in Whey

Lead in Protein

I've been anti-protein powder for years and rather than supplementing my diet with a scoop of 25-30 grams of protein in the form of whey I'd sooner eat a 100 gram piece of chicken and avoid all the added crap.

"While you’re probably taking them for some kind of health benefit, a lot of them are filled with sugars, emulsifiers, artificial sweeteners, and various other highly processed ingredients that can contribute to a wide range of health issues including cancers and cardiovascular disease."

Made in America Law

5 years ago anyone could slap a "made in America" label on a product so long as it was processed in the US. (ie. placed into containers and labelled in the US) Good news is in 2021 new regulations were implemented.

"a new Made in USA Labeling Rule went into effect in July 2021.

This rule prohibits marketers from including unqualified Made in USA claims on labels, packaging, and promotional materials unless:

1) final assembly or processing of the product occurs in the United States;

2) all significant processing that goes into the product occurs in the United States; and

3) all or virtually all ingredients or components of the product are made and sourced in the United States.

According to the FTC, “Made in USA” means that “all or virtually all” of the product has been made in the United States. In other words, all significant parts, processing, and labor that go into the product must be of US origin. Products should contain no (or only a negligible amount of) foreign content."

I recall fear mongering that opportunists could be using misleading tactics to profit by promoting cheap foreign protein powder as "made in America." Claiming it's domestic, taking advantage of regulatory loopholes by doing minimal processing in the U.S.

"The toxic elements found in Chinese whey protein and other supplements are not always there by accident, however. Because of lax government standards and regulations on supplements in China, many manufacturers add ingredients – as we saw earlier – that are dangerous and unwanted. More frighteningly, they are able to do this without placing the ingredients on the label."

Products Abroad

If you are in a foreign nation with more relaxed standards be weary of products claiming made in the USA. Post 2021 regulations products previously sold on Amazon's marketplace are now non-existant and only available for purchase via foreign shopping websites and applications but still carry the "Made in America" labels.

Linking an article from an immunologist and microbiologist. She breaks down the flaws in the methodology, and notes they use California’s prop 95 as the limit, not actual scientific guidelines.

Quoting from her insta because it’s more succinct than the article:

“Consumer Reports uses the very unscientific and incredibly chemophobic Prop 65 levels for lead, which were set in 1989 without any scientific basis.

Scientifically-grounded exposure guidelines, the interim reference levels (IRLs), are based on exposure levels that convert to blood lead levels.

The IRLs are 8.8 ug per day for reproductive age females and 12.5 ug for general adults. These are 17.6-times and 25-times higher daily exposure levels compared to the Prop 65 levels, respectively, and are extremely conservative.

A daily exposure level of lead of 12.5 ug equals a blood lead level of 0.5 ug/dL. Adverse health effects attributed to lead exposure in adults are not seen until blood lead levels reach 10-20 ug/aL.”

As someone who’s anti protein powders, I don’t expect you to change your mind. I posted this really for anyone else who comes along.

Sounds like some protein companies are going to be suing CR.

Yeah I do, too, but protein powders/drinks come in handy. I’ve always had blunted hunger cues and get full fast, having a drink form is helpful for packing calories in.
I inhale food. When I was younger I utilized it but now it's like everything else. Trying to get my vitamins and fibre from fruits, vegetables and grains instead of pill cocktails.

You seem to come across a lot of good info online. Where do you go for news? Just random searches?

My husband and one of my sons are like you, they can eat circles around me. I’m a slow eater and find it generally annoying, getting full too soon. I’ve dumped a salad into a blender and chugged it :p I do get the bulk of my nutrition from food though. I started using protein powder in high school because it was either that or I wasn’t eating until lunch.

I come across info because I have ADHD with a touch of the ‘tism. lol Research and digging into things is what makes my brain happy. Plus being fucked over by shit drs and having to advocate for myself gives good motivation.

Read the article yesterday @ work. Was thinking "dam another thing ruined".

Yeah real food is king but these are great for a assist to hit those protein goals.

I have always put whole unprocessed foods first in my diet. But have utilized whey proteins. Most of the negative hype have been with plant proteins. And it seems the ones with the largest serving size i.e.(most fillers) tend to be the worst. My prefered whey protein in plain unflavored isolate. Might not taste as great as some but i can chug a drink down in well less then 10 seconds so i don't worry about taste. Probably not the most healthy thing. But most of the stuff found in grocery stores really isn't that great anyway i find.
