It has been 21/2 years since Landis rode in a competitive manner after being found guilty of using synthetic testosterone in the 2006 Tour de France, in which he cycled into Paris wearing the race leader's maillot jaune. He subsequently was stripped of his Tour title and, after a lengthy court saga, was barred from racing for two years, a ban that will be lifted Friday.

"That's behind me now," he said. "I'm not dwelling on it."

Instead, his energies are directed at a new team and a fresh start in the pro peloton. Landis, whose former team (Phonak) was disbanded in the wake of the doping scandal, joined Team OUCH (nee HealthNet) of Oakland, the top squad competing on the North American circuit over the past few years. He spoke by phone from the team's training camp in Temecula (Riverside County).

"I'm excited about getting back into racing," he said. "The competitive aspect of racing is so satisfying. I missed it."
