What deadlift grip do you use?

hearing alternative grip causes bicep tears. Has anyone has this happen?

so trying strictly over hand grip now.

I didn’t tear my bicep but I severely strained it using mixed-grip. It took a year to fully recover and when I did it the pain was unreal. A complete bicep tear is tougher and would require surgery within a week of doing it because the muscle will retract and surgery gets more complicated.

It happens if you flex your arms during deadlift instead of simply letting them hang. I also stopped doing bicep curls (or if I do bicep curls I’ll only do them immediately after deadlift). Fatigued muscles are much more prone to tears and strains. So curling on Tuesday and deadlifting within a couple days of that is a real bad idea.

I deadlift and continue to use a mixed grip - just much more aware of letting the arms hang and pulling slack out of the bar before lifting.

Your grip will give out easier on dual overhand grip unless you use a hook grip and that takes some getting used to. If you’re not competing in powerlifting then straps are great to use.

Interesting, i havent been a fan of straps but not being aware of the alternating grip issue might look into them.

or keep doing double overhand and get huge forearms. Since i am not competing.

keeping reps higher then 6.

Did the bicep full heal?

Did the bicep full heal?

My bicep healed from the strain but it took
a full year. During that year I couldn’t use it at all, not even to lift a can or anything. A Strain is when the muscle stretches out too far and looses its elasticity. So almost a tear. Hurt real bad. I was able to deadlift during that year but definitely no mixed grip until it was fully recovered.

Stick with the dual overhand if you’re doing high rep stuff. You’ll have an iron handshake. Have a pair of straps for overload - they’re cheap and easy to use.

I had similar situation to @BigBaldBeardGuy when doing mixed grip one time 5 years ago strained the left bicep badly and took a long time to heal. Bought VersaGrips and they've been a help with grip. My grip has been dual overhand up to 365 and then mixed beyond that and go left over and right under.

Definitely I had flexed my left arm when trying to lock out and that was what caused the injury so I try not to flex the arms at all when pulling.

I'd been using mixed grip for years up until a couple of months ago when I switched to hook grip due to the paranoia about a bicep tear.

Form also plays a role in the risk I believe. If you don't hitch when pulling mixed grip then the risk should be minimal. I learned that one the hard way when I made the mistake of hitching to get to lockout and severely strained my left bicep.

Double overhand until I can't hang on to the bar (405ish) then I strap up.

I don't compete, so mixed grip is all risk, no reward. It's just not worth it.
What straps do you use?

can you drop the bar with straps or do you have to place it?

i rarely drop it unless it slips. Just curious on how to properly “strap up”

I just use some cheap nylon single loop straps. I think they're like $15. You put the loop around your wrist snugly then wrap the strap around the bottom of the bar. You grip over top of the strap and give the bar a twist backwards to tighten it on the bar.

You can drop the bar with them if you have to.

Nice, do you only use for deadlift?

Same here even when I did compete. I never could get around a mixed grip. It just didn't feel natural and I wasn't comfortable with it at all.

only like mixed grip if my goal is assymetrical training. full stretch for overhand and full contraction for underhand. i also keep my legs straight, bend my back, pulling from upper to lower back. gotta start loose to get the movement right

Fuck a mixed grip, way too risky. You gotta ask yourself, you in this for development or to satisfy an ego? I mean, straps never shortchanged me with back development so why risk it?
