Deadly bench press - man dead

Holy shit. That's a first for me, never heard of anyone actually dying.

This is one reason I use experienced guys to spot me on max attempts. I'm always scared if something goes really wrong I'm gonna get blank stares. Half the people that spot me the first time are completely lost on how to do it.

I was at a new gym and the bar was really bent. you know how they roll forward when there bent?

I wasn't paying attention and dropped 285 on my chest.

Worst part is I had a spotter that just sat there and watch the whole fucking thing happen. Broke two ribs. Still scares me when I go over to 285

I haven't done benchpress since the Academy because of this, I like to go to failure, and who can you trust?

Unless you tear a muscle or have an aneurysm or some such it's not like a spotter has to lift heavy, they just have to be on the ball.

Main reason i stick to dumbbells. I can just drop them if I fail. Good spotters are hard to come by. I fucking hate this shit when someone puts like a finger under the bar to help. Ninja, if I fail, your finger ain't gonna do shit!

I wish my fingers could rep 335

It sounds like he was using a suicide grip since the report says it rolled out of his hand. And since it rolled on his neck, I use a suicide grip (yes I know it's not the safest grip), it sounds like He was in racking the weight. I've also dropped the weight on my chest with this grip, but unless you are unracking it at the time it's going to roll on your chest. So I can only assume that he was use to this weight, other wise the spotter should have been assisting with the lift off. These are just assumptions though. Like most have said, the spotter could just be an idiot!

I can say this though, if the weight is falling due to rolling out of the grip, from a spotters angle all he can do is deflect the weight. That bitch is coming down no matter what!

reverse bench press im assuming... regular is hard to believe. unless douche bags just watched him die. I wanna smack those idiots on the smart phones texting and not doing shit right in the face everyday im in the gym. Wanna yank them out of machines and say, go do that shit somewhere else Mary, you aint doing shit.

I know some big boys with big chests who never bench. Not needed.

reverse bench press is jinxed .

first time I tried reverse bench press, just to see how it feels, with only 135 on the bar. I set it up in the power rack on the safety bars so I didn't have to unrack it, just reverse grip it and press it.

well you know how the power rack safety bars has those little holes on the ends, that fit a little pin, to keep the safety bar from coming out? who the hell uses them right?

like I said I had the barbell right on the bars i lied underneath and rolled the barbell in place. as I rolled the barbell in place one safety bar came undone and the barbell fell on my neck region.

luckily it was so light. everybody came running to save my life. but I was able to just kinda do a sit up/overhead press and they just reset the bars for me.

fuck reverse grip bench press.

Was needed back then, the Academy had a BP requirement and you had to make a certain number.

Can't say I enjoy flatbench, incline feels much better. Wish the gym had a cage or something similar for that, I'm distrusting of spotters.

If the bar slips out of your hands what is one spotter going to do? If your have 2 spotters, one on either side they can catch it.

Exactly my previous point. 315 rolling out and trying to catch is a lot different then someone needing a little help to complete that last Rep.
