dial-up vs Cable or DSL

i was just thinking, if "someone" wanted to know your whereabouts, wouldt it be easy for them to find you if you have dial up? just like tracing a call right to you doorstep??

how about cable modem or DSL??

Actually I think it would be the opposite. Dial-up Ip's are dynamic meaning there always changing. Cable Ip's are static meaning they dont change. It is A LOT easier to mask/ hide or change your IP address if you are on dial up.

Most cable isp's and dsl isp's give you a two day "lease" on an ip addy from a range of addresses. Once that lease expires you are automatically issued a new different ip.

That is the theory, but in practice the ip's often remain the same for years..
AND, you can pay extra for a fixed IP...

I would caution you in using the the term 'most' as this has not been the case with the past (3) providers that I have had - mediaone, at&t broadband, and comcast.

One benefit of a cable modem over all others, depending on where you live and the infrastructure in your area, is the near 3Mpbs performance of the line now that fiber is propagating outward from the CO's. If I am not mistaken, that is t3.

you can be found on dialup as easy as any other connection. if youve ever been k-lined off a irc server on dialup, youd know this to be true.

they have caller id guys, you can be found.

the most untraceable connection is satellite. but still, you can be found.

the only other way is proxies and IP spoofing. both are very easy, and can confuse say....a mod giving your IP out. but still, you are connecting through a ISP, so they can track you. in short, the only reason youd want to do any of this is to fool average joes, cause the ppl who count can get you everytime.
