Do I have a problem with E2, Androgel/shots make me feel much worse!

My testosterone levels came in at <200 as a 23 year old male. My doctor initially prescribed me Androgel 5mg and I didn't really notice an effect, so I started taking shots.

When I took a shot, I'd feel a burst of energy for a few hours and then bam, it'd all come crashing down. I'd feel like an emotional wreck for NO reason whatsoever. I don't normally suffer from depression, but I seriously started feeling like crying or breaking down over the most routine and trivial shit. I have never experienced something like that before. I'd also start feeling a great deal of fatigue, loss of balance, my vision would become sensitive to movement, and I'd feel horrible!

Well I stopped that. I then began to take Androgel again. 15mg, 10mg, 5mg, etc. The more testosterone I took the worse I would feel.

What is going on??????????

I still have a sex drive without the Testerone replacement, but I've never gotten "morning" wood even with a large dose through a syrine. I just feel like it's all going in reverse.

I took 10mg of Androgel tonight. I went from feeling pretty good to confusion, fatigue, and feeling like I'm on the verge of crying.

First why were your levels of Testosterone so low did your Dr. do more testing to try to find out way your so low. There are many things that can go wrong that lower a young mans T levels.
Stress over doing your working out in the gym, Diet not enough fat in it, a low graide infection, Iron overload, high Estradiol levels a faty liver the list goes on. Dr. 's are to slow or to fast to put one on TRT and once your on it it's dam hard to figure out why your low in the first place.

If you go to All Things Male - Center for Men's Health and read TRT: A Recipe for Success the tests and labs are in this that you needed. Can your post a copy of your labs that your Dr did with the units and ranges.

Your symptoms dont make any sense. First of all injections dont take effect that quickly. So that part is either fabricated or due to self-delusion. I find it hard to believe that anyone can have anything approaching a normal sex drive with a T level of 200. Your story doesnt make sense. I think you are either kidding us or yourself. If you actually do have the symptoms you describe you need more medical help than is available here.

Well I've only taken the shots twice. I'd say I felt alright up until about ~6 hours after the injection and then bam. I completely broke down mentally over moving furniture.

I'm a very sane person with no history of depression and it is extremely out of character. Like I felt like frowning/crying for no reason at all, it's an experience I'm not use to. It was clearly the T.

And yes, I do have a normal sex drive without the medication. I also have a ton of body hair, and I'm in pretty good shape. There are some people who are asymptomatic with low levels, I may be one of them.

And yes, I do have very big health issues. I have Addison's disease, as I mentioned in the post above. But don't fucking deride me for being self delusional, because that's bullshit. I know how I feel when I take the testosterone and it's clearly counter-productive.

When I took the 10mg gel, I felt bad within 20 minutes. Went from being extremely excited over the 4th of July celebrations to fucking sitting there like what the fuck, why am I so sad? Everyone told me I was out of it. Like I was petrified being around friends I've known for years. Instead of smiling, my body was sending signals to frown. Two days later, I feel normal again. The shots on the other hand made me feel out of place for a week or so... This happens EVERY time I take testosterone, it's just far less noticeable with the 5mg androgel. I've tried it for ~4-5 months now. It's not working.

I have only ever felt like that after taking the testosterone. I'm going in to see the doctor tommorow, should I ask about HCG instead?

And you can fuck off. I wasted away 4 years of the best years of my life 18-22 because everyone kept telling me that I was normal when I was feeling absolutely and utterly horrible. That sleeping for 16 hours a day and not being able to take a drive down the interstate for longer than 1 hour was "normal". That it was all in my head. To not being able to exercise without not being able to move the entire day afterward. That I was normal. To being extremely dehydrated irregardless of fluid intake. Then I get blood work done and it turns out to be Addison's disease. Yeah real fucking normal. I know what I feel and unless you're in my shoes, don't make fucktarded presumptions about my state of health or well-being.

Hey, I totally feel your pain. I have hypothalamic hypothyroidism and it's been a whirlwind. I also started out on Testim 5% for about a week and it wasn't getting absorbed or something b/c of my skin. I got much worse, more irritable and I would just get really aggressive. The slightest things pissed me off. My t-levels were low (168) and they put me on HCG. That stuff helped out a lot. It gave me frequent erections etc. The next round wasn't as effective but I'd say my drinking definitely hurt that one. My depression went away, I got much more confident and I began to love life. Then, they ran out of HCG so they had to put me on testosterone. wow...I can tell you that was a week of HELL. I couldn't get it up except for periods in the morning or afternoon. No morning wood or anything. I became extremely emotional, crying over stupid stuff and blowing things way out of proportion. Its starting to wear off now but I can tell you that there is something in my body that does not like the testosterone at all.
Keep your head up. You're not the only guy that this is happening to. It does suck but I'm so relieved that there are others out there and doctors that will help us. It will get better eventually, it just takes some time. I have wondered why I changed so much over a year!

What should I tell my doctor to get him to prescribe HGC? I have never heard of it and there's very little information on the web regarding it being an effective therapy.

He gives me a fair amount of leeway with the meds I ask for, cytomel, armour, cortef... but I'm not sure how to bring this up. It's very likely that he's never even heard of it.

I'm not sure but I think that if you say that you want to have children and have low testosterone, a doctor will prescribe you HCG. My doctor asked me if I wanted to have kids (I'm 23 though!) and I said yes. The doctor's office administers it to me, they don't prescribe it. They won't prescribe you HCG unless you say you want to have kids. Otherwise, i'd find another doctor which I know is hard to do. I'm in the East AL/West GA area and there's only one endocrinologist office.

Not to mention, neither me nor my doctor have any inclination whether my lack of T is primary or secondary.

Here are some labs though results.

Testosterone 209 (normal 241-827) I'm a 23 year old male so I'm assuming normal is closer to 827 than 241 :).

Follicle Stimulating Hormone 2.0 (normal 1.5-14.0) So yeah, pretty low. These labs that my doctor uses have some pretty fucking wide ranges. The measurement they used for this lab is MIU/ML but I read on WEBMD that the normal range for this lab is 5-15IU/L. Does this indicate a very low FSH?

Luteinizing Hormone 3.8 (normal 1.0-9.0)

Me and you are very similar. I'm 23 years old too. I have hypothalamic hypothyroidism and I know that can make this very complicated. It sucks having a sex drive and not being able to get it up.

Testosterone=168
LH=1.3
FSH=3.2

Well I'm seeing two physicians. One is a very by-the-book endocrinologist who is very thorough who I've just started to see and the other is a Rheumatoid Specialist that I've been seeing for several years.

I began seeing the RA doc a while back because there was no endocrinologist in my city of 140,000 people for a period of 2-3 years. Endocrinology isn't his field so he gives me some leeway with the meds I ask for and an appt with him is more of a collaboration than anything. This is how I found the Addison's and low T levels.

The endocrinologist, who I have an appt with next month, is very by the book. I initially asked for T shots and he said no, there's no point. The gels are better in every way. So yeah, there's little change I'll be seeing an alternative therapy from him.

However, the RA doctor is open I just need to be able to present him with something more than a crackpot theory. Like show him HCG is a viable alternative to TRT in certain men. Also could you take a look at those labs and tell me if it looks like secondary or primary hypogonadism?

Also, do I need any tests done before I ask him to prescribe this therapy? Information regarding HCG is so hard to come by, so I think when I show up I'll probably get a "wtf, I've never heard of that" look more than anything.

thought I would post a reply. Was recently reading thru this site (found it when we talked about male hormone replacement on a site I am on). I was interested because my husband takes T and sees Dr Shippen.
I have Celiac also and my daughter age 25 has it. I wanted to share w/you some of the things that we have learned about our hormone issues.
With Celiac you have malabsorbtion issues and unless that gets corrected (by a total gluten free diet and certain vitamin replacements) your hormones don't work.
We found an endo in NYC that is a Vitamin D/calcium specialist that got my daughters ovaries up and running. Without Vit D the body does not absorb calcium and w/o the calcium the ovaries don't work. I am not saying it is the same for a male but I think it may pay to ask what can I do to jump start my own system. I realize you have thyroid/adrenal issues but you may benefit from some blood testing in the vitamin/mineral areas.
I am 48 an was diagnosed at 41 w/celiac and had hormone issues my entire life,but taking large amounts of Vit D has my body operating the way it was supposed to.
Good luck and keep looking for answers.

Just as a point of reference.

I had no problems with sex when my T levels were around 200.
I just felt like dying every day.

T Gels did nothing for me, except give me some side effects and dropped my T levels a little bit.
Shots were like a miracle. 1000x better. So if your doc will only consider gels, he's missing the boat there. They dont work for everyone.

Also, the first time I got a T shot, I could definitely feel the difference within 6 hours. Brain fog cleared up very fast. I felt the energy burst within a day as well.
