Double Filtration

I do not have access to an autoclave; therefore, sterilizing the glass media bottles for each brew would be tricky.

A thought that I had would be to filter the gear through a bottle top filter (0.22) into a glass media bottle that has been cleansed as best as possible, then drawing up the oil into a syringe and transferring into pre-sterilized vials by way of a syringe filter (0.22) and caulk gun.

Being able to maintain a closed system gives me peace of mind producing a sterile end product. Would bottle top filtration>>> syringe filter >>> pre-sterilized vial increase the flow rate of the oil? I've been reading about syringe filters being a hassle, and would love feedback as to whether or not this method would increase the flow rate of the oil (since it would have already been filtered) while maintaining a closed system using a syringe filter for the final transfer.

Thanks

These are all you need for your media bottle. I just let them soak in iso alcohol while I filter with a bottle top into the sterile media jar. Then screw them on. It's then essentially a giant vial. Draw from it and dispense into sterile filters. Then you don't have to fuck with syringe filters cause they blow ass.

Thanks for the information! Where I struggle is getting comfortable with sterilizing the media jar. Do you use a pressure cooker/autoclave? Or the oven method?

I used the oven method. I am a novice brewer so I'm sure others will chime in. But I do 500°f for 1.5 hours.

Bottle top + syringe filter would be overkill.
Rather focus on either getting factory sterile media bottles, or at least properly sterilizing them.
Just cleaning them ain't enough.
At least use some Alcohol, preferably Hydrogen Peroxide.
My favorite: peroxide, then soak and rinse in alcohol, soak in alcohol again and burn alcohol (pyrex glass bottle is required, not plastic)
I'm probably going to get flamed for flaming alcohol lol, but it works.

Thanks for that step by step process. I'm going to look into a dry heat sterilizer online to use on my glass media receivers.

Proper autoclaves are a bit pricey.
Probably makes sense to use a new factory sterile bottle every day you brew (you don't brew every single day, do you?).
Sure you reuse them but only within the same day. Pretty clean IMO.

I'll more than likely go that route starting out, and upgrade to a proper autoclave/dry heat sterilizer in the future if I decide to brew more often

Yea I would just syringe filter it into the vials. The best part of using bottle tops is not having to use syringe filters. But the best part of using syringe filters is going straight from syringe to filter to sealed sterile vials.

Doing both is unnecessary.
