Elevation Training Masks

I keep seeing more and more of these pop up at gyms all across San Diego. I can see the point if you're an actual athlete, train in mma or are a cross fit pussy. But most of the guys I see wearing them look like wanna be ufc fighters. Most are very skinny and pretty damn weak. Its cool to look like Bain and all, but are these masks really functional to wear while lifting weights? I kind of feel like its another fad, similar to the vibram 5 toes. I really hate them.

Altitude/elevation training is actually very useful for performance athletes. Training at higher elevations will increase your RBC, even for a while after you drop altitudes. The U.S olympic training center in Colorado is at 6000+ft elevation.

Pretty useful for endurance / performance athletes who don't want to use EPO or AAS or sleep in an altitude chamber.

I can see why MMA or Crossfit guys would use these but I doubt most of us here would really benefit from it.

Thanks for the explanation, now I can ask these dudes what they're training for ;)

Only way you can get the adaptations of elevation training is to train at elevation. You cannot achieve hypoxia (increased RBC) at sea level unless they're lifting inside of a hyperbaric chamber. All these masks are training is for you to have more breathing capacity ie lung strength.

Great for the lungs absolutely pointless for bodybuilding. Absolutely stupid for anybody that isn't a fighter or a runner.

Apparently if you wear a Tapout shirt you are a MMA fighter at least a lot of these twerks seem to think they are in their head these days.
