Everyday Chores 4 workout

We just had a ton of ice/snow and yesterday I was shoveling for 3 1/2 hours. Well today my back is sore-in a good way- from between my shoulder blades all the way down to my lower back-tush area. Now I was wondering why these activities always give me this good soreness-so much more than changing up my workouts. I have changed it up using heavier weight and the lighter weight, adding stability ball exercises and I still plateau so quickly with these "isolation" exercises. I was wondering what you all do that give you a great workout--that doesn't involve gym equipement?

Tug of war with my dogs gets me every time. It feels like I did a 2 hour forearm workout followed by 4 hours of shoulders. My dogs are 120lbs and 110lbs though so it really is a lot of weight!
Glad you took all the snow over there Sporty, we just got rain and a little ice! :D

Sporty try these
1) If you have stairs try walking on your toes everytime you go up or down them this will stress your calves.
2) washing my car and painting always give me a killer shoulder workout.
3) a rehab based exercise we use at work is sit in a stool or chair that rolls. Now extend one leg at a time as if you were walking. Be sure to dig your heel into the carpet for maximum hamstring firing. do a couple laps around the room and you'll feel the burn.

Building barbed wire fence cross rugged country, driving the steel fence post into ground with rock will kick your ass.My second one is much easier but will get you just as sore..ride horses bareback,do alot of loping on them..this will get your entire body sore,or better yet just enter up in the bull and bareback riding at your local county fair..works for me everytime !

i second the horse riding, in the summer i train horses and i tell ya the first couple weeks i feel the pain. it is a great way to get into shape.

I box and wrestle. That's what I do that requires no equipment, though it does require a partner. Other than that, if you buy a whole bunch of food and walk home from the grocery store, that's a great workout. ;)

Incidentally, I just read an article the other day that said, according to some estimates, labor saving devices(escalators, dish washers, snow blowers, etc.) have caused a decrease of 800 calories burned per day for modern Americans.

what about carrying a 90lb ruck full of ammo, commo, food, water plus your gear, basic load, and personal weapons Through 6 clicks in the desert. Ummm leg burn?

That was the worst response and didnt help in anyway...and I know what he's talking about being former military (8 years)

Im not being perverted but I think sex is an awesome workout, serious calorie burner, and on top of that extremely fun!! I agree with the dogs approach also, i play tug and football with mine and its a great workout, i always take the steps (no elevators)and exagerrate them (squeeze and contract) pushups and pullups are amazing and can be done anywhere with lots of variation..i know what you mean about shoveling the snow and i know the soreness you felt..one day i worked in the flower garden pulling weeds and planting things to surprise the wife and the next 3 days i was like WTF??? extremely sore, and i work out 5 times a week at least..its hitting those fibers you normally dont hit that get you!!!

Just got in a load of alfalfa hay square bales..roughly 80 lbs each..load those on trailer, take to barn, unload and stack..killer lats back and traps not to mention legs !

Go to a playground when its quiet, there are usually all sorts of bars and whatnot that you can do pullups, chins, etc on at a variety of angles. Also like Mick suggested, walking up stairs on your toes all day is great too! Especially if you do a raise on each one.

edit - Just realized the first thing I mentioned is not an every day chore, but it's still not a bad idea!

I'd be concerned for you if going to playgrounds on a daily basis was a "chore" of yours
