Fate

This could prove to be an interesting thread...we'll see.

Since it's so fucking boring around here today, I'll start this up. Who believes in fate?

Since it may hinder discussion, I'll leave out my personal thoughts on the matter for a few posts and then I'll chime in and tear some asses up. ;)

for one I'll admit I don't even like the idea of having a destiny that I can't change (if that's what you mean by fate). Furthermore, it doesn't make sense to me. Example: If you go to AA you're told that you have the "alcoholic gene", you were destined to be an alcoholic, its in your blood. What a load of tripe.

Besides I can't believe YOU would by into that mumbo-jumbo Grizz.

I knew you'd be all over this thread. In fact, I put it up knowing that you, Mark and myself could have some fun in it. I'm still holding my thoughts on the matter back, but you might be onto something. ;)

Referesh the board. I put up anothe that I think you might have an opinion on.

ok. I'll go again. Forgive me for bringing this up Grizz. King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 9:11 that "time and unforeseen occurance befall them all". Sometimes the unexpected happens. Shit happens. There is no way to predict it. If there were I would manage a hedge fund. Remarkable events, good and bad, often come down to timing.

Mathematics. Life is all chance...I'll go with that angle.

I'm curious to see who will be the first to say it's all God's will (...or whoever your supreme being is.)

JaPe.

Not me bro. Hey I'm a "Senior Member" now. Happy 100th to me.:D

Then this is not going to be any fun.

I didn't intend it to be fun between you and I. I already knew your stance. I'm still waiting for someone to say that they believe in fate.

While I wait for that, I'll throw out some food for though. Assuming that there is such a thing as fate(all event are predetermined) then we can not fault anyone for anything they do. If a guy kills 34 people in a PCP induced, pyschedelic, uzi toting rage, we can no more punish him for his actions than we can hold him accountable. Why? Because he is not repsonsible for them. The "Fates" wove that particular strand into their web. Not his fault.

Similarly, the sentiment that "everything happens for a reason" is also silly. It's true, Bill died BECAUSE he was struck by a truck. That is "the reason." However, to imply that it happened because it's "part of God's plan" or something is silly. If people are endowed with free will, then theere can be no fate.

In love, there is no such thing as a "soul mate". There can be no one particular person that you are destined or "supposed" to be with because that would mean that all of life is scripted.

There can also not be any individual cases of fate. For instance, Jimmy can not be fated to run Billy over on March 12th, 2004, but not fated to do anything else in his life. This is because everyone else would have to be fated to perform the actions that they did on that particular day.

Jimmy was fated to hit billy because his children(Jimmy's) were fated to wake up late that morning and miss the bus which caused Jimmy to have to drive his kids to school, which was why he was speeding. Billy was fated to be at the intersektion of A st. and B st. because the night before his girlfriend was fated to lock her keys in her car while she was following her predetermined fate of getting really drunk on the shots that Fred was fated to buy her since he was fated to lose his job at the factory which was predetermined to close because the market for widgets was fated to fail at that particular time. Etc. ad naseum.

Well, even if no one else is participating, I still have fun talking to myself. It's about the best conversation I'm likely to find around here anyway. ;)

I love the "soul-mate" thing. If there is only one person out there who is your soulmate. You're screwed. What exactly are the chances that you would ever even see that person? Or that you would speak the same language? Or be of the appropriate gender? Or be "available" at the same time?

To believe in predestination is a reDICKulous waste of time. Is every thing that I do something preordained on my path to my destiny? What if I change my mind? Did the fates already know I was going to change my mind and change it for me? It bakes my noodle just thinking about it.

I know what is the motivator behind this one, Grizz...You dumped his Freakyness, huh?? And he said you two were, "Meant to be"...Now it's all clear!!

Hey, I'm going to take a guess that that is you in your avatar. Am I correct?

If it is, and I'm sure it is, you're looking damn good, bro. I can't decide what you weigh, though. You look kind of tall, so I'd guess you're pushing 235-250 in that pic.

What are your stats?

Thanks Grizz - yeah, that's me. I'm 5'6, 230+ now, but was about 200 in that picture. I'd easily give up a few pounds to be taller, but oh well, work with whatcha got, right?

lol Hey Grizzly don't flatter yourself to much. :D

I had to, Dolfe. It's come to my attention that many people don't like to disagree with me. Of course, that just might be in person, since I can be an opposing figure.

I figured that if I went off at the mouth about how retarded fate is, no one would reply in the affirmative about their belief in it.
