Filtering Idea--is this available?

For the homebewer out there, filtering should be faster and more sterile than it currently is.
So, here is what I am looking for.
See these links to get an idea of what I am referring to:
http://www.millipore.com/catalogue.nsf/docs/c3236
http://www.millipore.com/publications.nsf/docs/pf120en00

Ok, now instead of filtering your gear into a large open bottle or any OPEN container, is there a way to AFFIX a NEEDLE to the end of one of these vacuum driven (hand vac pump is perfect and cheap) filter units so I would be able filter directly into my sterile vials?

Since most, if not all of us, do not have a hood to keep things sterile, filtering into an open container is pointless. You still have to then transfer ,again, your now sterile gear (from the OPEN bottle used by these filter systems) to your sealed sterile vials. SKIP the use of the OPEN bottles (I know, there are Stericups, but you still have to unscrew the tops and transfer the gear to your sterile vials= not too sterile).
and go right to filtering into your sterile 10 or 20mL vials.
REMEMBER to keep in mind the two links I provided above.

Purpose of all this........to make as sterile of gear as possible in a
NON-sterile environment! NO use of hoods, cleanrooms, ect. here. Homebrewers just trying to make high quality SAFE gear for personal use.

So WTF am I looking for again?
-Something ALMOST just like this -------> http://www.millipore.com/publications.nsf/docs/pf120en00
BUT with a NEEDLE attached to the filter end NOT a conical!

first... i assume you are trying to due a larger quantity than a
syringe filter can handle because in a way you are asking
if you can turn a stericup into a high volume syringe filter

yes it can be done/modified to do what you want

but here are the problems i foresee

ONE... is wasted fluid as the area for the atachment of a vaccum

source must be between the needle and the filter membrane

so you will loose 5-10 ml every batch

TWO ... the area in the stopper where the needle is inserted

may leak allowing outside air to go into the vial and this will in effect

be unsterile

THREE ... the second you remove the cover from the needle it is

unsterile and when you change over to a new empty vial its exposed

again

SORRY DIABLO you have a great idea there and using quality filters
but the easier battle is finding a way to brew in a sanitarty condition

****Not necessarily high volumes (100-200mls tops). If you again look at this filter unit http://www.millipore.com/publicatio.../docs/pf120en00 you will see that it is designed for 50mLs and should have very little gear left as dead volume.*****

yes it can be done/modified to do what you want

****Ok....how would you modify this to actually work? Im not the best with tools, wait......what are tools again? heh

1) "ONE... is wasted fluid as the area for the atachment of a vaccum

source must be between the needle and the filter membrane

*******I cant see there being more than 1000-2000uL tops (1-2mls) lost to the dead volume in the filter device. 5-10 mls is far too high in my opinion.********

2) "TWO ... the area in the stopper where the needle is inserted

may leak allowing outside air to go into the vial and this will in effect

be unsterile"

********If you were familiar with the standard filtering techniques of most homebrewers, you would know that air would NOT be going INTO the vial during filtering, rather being PUSHED out, since your liquid is displacing volume. If air is being pushed out, bacterial/air would have a difficult time getting in.
Secondly, to avoid any gases/air from escaping around the needle, you would simply put a filtered needle into the top of the vial to VENT any pressure.*******

3) "THREE ... the second you remove the cover from the needle it is

unsterile and when you change over to a new empty vial its exposed

again"

******To help in achieveing maximum sterility, put an alcohol pad directly over the vial you are about to filter into. That way, your now unsterile needle (from taking the cap off) will have to pass through the alcohol pad thus helping stay sterile. Do this for every vial. *******

4) "SORRY DIABLO you have a great idea there and using quality filters
but the easier battle is finding a way to brew in a sanitarty condition
"

*******As I mentioned above in my first post, most of us do not have access to a clean room or hood and we have to try to MAXIMIZE the sterility of out gear as best possible. I realize we cannot be as stringent and sterile as pharmaceutical gear (ignoring QV and the similar). This thread was meant to HELP MAXIMIZE sterility, NOT make perfectly sterile gear. Thats just not possible for the avid homebrewer.

Lastly, the easier battle is NOT finding a way to brew in a sanitary condition. Why? Because, we make gear in our homes and apartments with cats and dogs and kids and all sorts of filth shit running around all over the place (dirty air, bacteria EVERYWHERE, dust, pollen, spores, viri, etc). We will NOT have access to conditions sanitary enough to make high sterilty gear with out changing the filtering techniques that we use today!

Thank you for your post though. This feedback is what we need to find solutions to some major problems. Much appreciated.

Im doing the same

I posted a similar thread on Steroid.com. Got pretty much nada but haven't had time to follow up. I did note a thread over there that was very promising. Look in the lab section. I will keep you updated if you will do the same.

Sounds good bro. I just dont understand why more homebrewers dont speak up here.
Come on guys, dont be so damn lazy. What, Downstategy, Borderbound and I are the ONLY homebrewers on this entire site?!!!???? BS!
