Finnish police to launch preliminary inquiry into ski doping

[SIZE=-1]Finland's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Thursday it would launch a preliminary inquiry into the so-called Finnish News Agency (STT) case, adding an undisclosed number of people were suspected of aggravated deceit and false denunciation.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]Among those interviewed by the NBI is Kari-Pekka Kyrö, a former head coach of the Finnish cross-country skiing team.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]The preliminary investigation follows claims by Mr Kyrö that "a systematic doping culture" had prevailed in the Finnish Ski Association in the 1990s with the consent of the top brass of the sport's governing body.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=-1]In 1998, the Helsinki district court found the then editor of STT and a reporter guilty of libel, handed them conditional prison sentences and ordered the news agency to pay damages to 19 complainants. An appeals court converted the sentences to fines and rejected the damages claims of 14 complainants.[/SIZE]
