How does filtering brew, sterilize?

Hey,

I’m looking into making my own batch of test cyp and I want to be a thorough as possible. I keep seeing people referring to the filtering process as sterilization. Once the sterilized filter is saturated with the brew, I don’t see how a sterilized product would be coming out the other side. Am I missing something?

I’m not an expert but I’ve been brewing my own gear a while. I believe the correct answer is that as long as the filter is intact, in order for the substance to flow through the filter it is mechanically preventing things from passing through of a certain size. The pathogens that are harmful we want to filter out are generally able to be taken out if it passes through a .22 micron filter.

So yeah the filter gets dirty. It’s supposed to get dirty if that makes sense.

Again if I’m not 100% correct on this someone here will be able to help out. But this is the general way the filter cleans your gear.

My understanding is the BA is the sterilization agent and the filter removes other pathogens. Take that for what it's worth, I'm also not an expert, just a very experienced home brewer who has never had an infection

Filters really do not sterilize. They remove particulates down to what ever size the filter is. And BA can sterilize some. Heat is one of the ways to really guarantee that nothing is growing in there. Having USP certified ingredients is also a good start. Although some do not care about that. Just depends on how safe you want to be.

From my modest experience in brewing I can tell you this:

1) Filtering does help with making your final product more sterile if I can say so but it does not by any means guarantee 100% sterility. Filters we use are 0.22 micron which means that pores on it have a 220 nanometer. A lot of particles, bacteria etc. can't pass through those pores since they are larger than that. Viruses and pyrogens on the other hand can pass so that's why you should watch out how and where you brew before you even get to filtering.

2) If filter is getting dirty or clogged on the side where you connect your syringe it's perfectly fine and it means your filter is doing what it's supposed to do - keep contaminants out of your solution. If the filter gets dirty on the other side that is the problem because it might have teared or something.

3) Benzyl Alcohol will not sterilize your brew because it is a bacteriostat and not bactericidal. It will however keep bacteria from growing in your solution which is also a great way to minimize the risk.

4) My personal opinion (and I might be dead wrong) is that in home conditions you can't make perfectly sterile batch but that's what immunity is for.

Good info, thanks gents. A follow up question: what’s a reasonable temperature to heat the test cyp to while dissolving as an added way of sterilizing without wrecking the product?

The use of heat alone is not a viable means of sterilization without also increasing pressure. When it comes to sterilizing the final product in a household setting, it's improbable to find containers that can endure sufficient internal pressure and maintain a proper seal. Moreover, as others have mentioned, relying solely on terminal sterilization methods like filtration, which isn't the most effective method, does not negate the importance of additional precautions to prevent the introduction of pyrogens and microorganisms.

To minimize contamination, it's crucial to ensure proper hygiene and cleanliness at every stage of the process. This includes disinfecting the environment, cleaning and sterilizing containers, adhering to sterile handling procedures (such as wearing appropriate attire), and using sterile solvents. When utilizing solvents, it's advisable to use small packages whenever possible, opt for at least distilled water for rinsing, and consume them immediately after opening.

Hey and what do you recommend is is the cheapest and easiest way to do the filtering process because I am reading about people use $200 plus worth of the machinery?

Just use syringe filters, if you are just brewing under a liter of gear. It's tricky and works out your fingers and forearm, but for us small scale personal brewers,it works and cheap.

Ok thanks I am buying 75 grams of tren ace and test e but will only be brewing about 50 grams of each only syringe filters are fine for that right and in see everybody talking about syringe filters do you think you can recommend the right exact ones to use for my process or where I can find it thank you sir.

You can search for whatman .22um pvdf depending where you are it can be in amazon or some medical supplies store.

There's also biomed brand in Amazon. That's what I used when I run out of whatmans and can't find any.

Use the search button and look up all the info you need over at homebrew section. Most of the questions if not all are already been brought up.

Good luck.
