Sup meso. Was prepping my slin pins for the week and was wondering how long can you keep them backloaded for before contamination starts? Iv prepped 7 for the week ed pinning. Can I prep more or should I prep less? Read somewhere they’re good for a month but wanted to hear some more thoughts.

Thankd

Depends on the carrier oil and/or solvents. Don't try it with miglyol, guaicol or ethyl oleate. If it's just a usual carrier like MCT, GSO, sesame etc and just BA and BB you're probably good to go for a month.

Although, if you want to be 100% sure put 0,2 ml in a slin pin and store it for a month while keep doing what you're doing now with the weekly backloads and then inspect it carefully to see if there's any floaters in or a swelled up rubber plunger.

i have had preloaded syringes for 3 weeks and its fine
just make sure your stuff is EO free
that thing will eat the rubber of the syringe
I’ll look to see if they are. What does EO mean? I get the BD ultra fine pins do you know if they are okay?

yea all my oils are Mct with bb and ba. I’ll keep an eye on the rubber plunger

EO is ethyl oleate, a synthetic carrier oil. BD is a good quality company, i use micro fine.

Any brand besides BD degrades in 30 min. And rubber stopper is everywhere, this is seems from my brewing experience

I have kept it for a month once. Nothing happened, no bad signs or something. I would not recommend it for that long, but about 2 weeks should be fine.

You can't see how much is leeching from the stopper into the solution. BA and BB are just about the worst solvents when it comes to sucking the toxic extractables out of unprotected rubber. Prefilled syringes containing meds that have BA or BB in them are required by FDA to use fluoro coated plunger stoppers. Your insulin pins are definitely not using coated stoppers.

If you want to be safe you can back fill them and store them standing up with the plunger pulled all the way back and no oil touching it

So basically just use the expensive bd insulin pens? Or the coated ones have a special name? What about MCT oil though?

Hmm, good idea actually. Would still be paranoid about the plastic leaching into the oil lol

Regular syringes are not intended for long term storage of medicines, and every once in while, because so many organizations violate the regulations and do this, problems occur. Here we have chems from the stoppers leaching out and interacting with water based drugs, which is probably why compounders thought it was safe to prefill them.

As the FDA stated in its warning:

Hospital and pharmacy staff should check supply stocks and remove drug products that were filled by pharmacies or outsourcing facilities and stored in general purpose BD 3ml and 5ml syringes. These syringes are marked with the BD logo at the base of the syringe.

At this time, FDA does not have information on how long drugs can be stored in these syringes before degrading. There is no information to suggest that there is a problem with potency or drug degradation when medication is administered promptly after the syringes are filled.

This warning does not extend to products approved by FDA for marketing as pre-filled syringes, because as part of the approval process, FDA has determined that these products have been shown to maintain stability in the syringe container through the expiration date on the product.

On July 30, 2015, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) issued a Special Alert regarding this problem. See http://www.ismp.org/newsletters/acutecare/articles/loss-of-drug-potency.aspx

Same thing with vials keep them stored upright so no oil can touch the stopper and potentially degrade it

The topic of long term storage of oils has come up, and the research into that has shown coated, or possibly silicone stoppers are needed for keeping oils good for many years. BA molecules can evaporate and slip through non-coated stoppers, resulting in a loss of anti-bacterial properties.

Very interesting, I may have to transfer some of my oils or replace the stoppers

If the oil is properly made, and bacteriostatic, and you use the correct vial (believe it or not crappy glass can result in contaminant leeching into oils), an MCT oil based steroid has an excellent chance of lasting 15 years+ with no significant degradation.
