How often do you guys work your calfs

Hardly ever ; I got pretty big calves naturally . All I need is to lean-out to bring them out .Those are 55 yr old calves ....

I have good calves naturally as well cuz I started playing football and baseball when I was young. They still look much better since I've been hitting them a lot though, it was time well spent. Many guys will do 5 sets of Calf raises one day a week and wonder why there calves suck. Even if one has great calves naturally they could still improve them.

As far as calves go you're height seems to be a factor. I'm average height so my calves are average. For body builders 6' and up they can hard as hell to develop. That's why some pro's just have to get implants or synthol them. I know some guys that are a little on the short side and they just genetically have massive calves. Seems like nowadays though the right drug cocktail can make any and every muscle grow. Some people comment that todays pro's look they come out of the same injection mold. Sure you can get them to grow. But I think the end result is more genetics and drugs than training.

As far as calf training I'd say hit them every leg day. Do them the first and last exercise. Try exercise standing calf raises and the other sitting. You have to do them slow and squeeze a good contraction for a second at mid point. Try doing them with feet straight, a set with toes pointed outward and a set with toes pointed inward. Try to hit them from every angle or side. Whatever muscle I hit I always try to hit it from every angle. Or say for shoulders hit the whole muscle with compound movement, then isolate front, medial and rear delts with isolated movements. Then hit the whole muscle again with a machine until failure.

Your crazy. Im 6'1 mine are stupendous. Long ass muscle belly and wide as a cobra hood. Ill post pics when I get a chance. Barely ever do ANYTHING for them

Hell yeah bro! What are those like 19 inches? Whats your routine look like for them? Do youvalve ma lot of the seated raises?

Around 19", yes. As for training them, its mostly high rep, heavy weight, high intensity. For example, I may load up a seated hammer strength calve machine with 6 plates per side and just do a few warm ups and then one work set of 12 reps. Only that 1 set may be 20 second negatives on each rep and a level of brutality few could endure

@Oregonstrong. Me and the wife tried the first calve workout on your list last night. Wow my calves were still twitching on the way home from the gym. We plan on switching it up with some of the other workouts you outlined. Thanks for the help brother!

All these people talking bout how they train them once a week or not at all have me jealous as shit. My calves just don't want to grow lol I'm making some progress now but I'm still at the point where I cringe every time I see them. ha

Well, my friend you are genetically gifted. I'm not saying this is how it always is. You still have ectomorphs, endomorphs and mesomorphs at different heights. I'm simply using some observational averages I've made. 6'1" is definitely still within the pro-material zone. Look at Markus Ruhl, how tall was that guy? Like 6'3"-4" or something. That's amazing that you don't even have to really target them. My calves used to be a lagging muscle, but due to whatever factors. I'm actually pretty happy with them now and think they are good proportionally. They can and will respond to training. They are made up of more fast twitch fibers I believe. So you have to train them accordingly. I think doing the exercise slow and concentrating on the negative portion as much as positive will get you somewhere. Then again I believe that to be true in general for every muscle. The kicker is the perfect workout plan will only be perfect for so long. Based on the principle of muscle confusion your body will adapt to it and you'll likely need to change it again at some point.

Right on brother! Glad I could help. I know I have seen more development since switching to those techniques. I usually run one of those workouts for a week then switch to another one the next week. I have a few more up my sleeve as well when I have time I will post them up.
