In recent weeks I've been pushing my body to the limit at the gym. On the Saturday I did a heavy legs day squatting a record weight for myself. Then after 1 day break I went back and did the chest/tri's routine on Monday which also includes lots of heavy abdominal work and leg raises. Note that I felt nothing unusual after either of the above two workouts, as strenuous as they were.
I noticed on Tuesday evening that a kind of pain developed at the top of my right leg where it joins the hip/groin and I pressed against the pain area and noticed something that seemed to go back in and the pain was somewhat relieved.... I then had a burning sensation there for a while, and its been kinda itchy/achey ever since.
I'm fairly sure its a right inguinal hernia, and that my inguinal wall had been weakened by the extensive ab work on the Monday and finally gave way during some other activity on the Tuesday where I noticed the lump.
I discussed it with colleagues at work who actually deal with injured workers who have hernias, and the most sensible person suggested I lay off the heavy lifting for a while and see if it repairs itself. Others suggested that once compromised, they never really heal, and that surgery is the only real option.
I was quite happy to lay off the lifting for a while in the hope that it recovers, however its a constant annoyance, even if the pain is only mild. Anyone have any experience with these hernias, and know whether they can indeed self repair? If so what sort of timeframe?
Furthermore, is there a simple home test I can use to detect for sure if tis a hernia - someone suggested it might just be a groin strain....
Cheers
