Former Canby police Officer Jason D. Deason, who faces charges of official misconduct in a steroid-abuse case, asked a judge Monday to allow him to travel to England to visit his father.

Instead, Clackamas County Presiding Circuit Judge Steven L. Maurer told Deason to surrender his passport Wednesday, "given the public interest and legitimate community interest" in seeing the prosecution proceed.

Deason's lawyer, Leonard Kovac Jr., told the court that Deason and his girlfriend had airline tickets to visit Deason's dad in Bristol, England, from March 18 to 26.

Deason, 39, said he had booked the flights in December, weeks after an FBI agent flew to San Diego, where Deason was doing a land-surveying job, for a detailed interview in the case. The case is centered on Deason's alleged steroid abuse and his police chief's alleged cover-up of the misconduct.

Deason turned himself in to authorities last month and faces eight official-misconduct charges and one count of possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors.
