Unless you're a powerlifter squatting huge weight, you don't need them. One of the mistakes I made when I was younger was to reach for the belt and straps to fast. You begin to rely on them. You want you tendons and core to strengthen with the rest of your body.

Good point for all the new people starting out. I also made the mistake of using a belt too soon and using it to compensate for shitty technique.

What would you recommend for grip strength, I have been considering using straps because I can dead lift more than my grip will allow.
I have been doing, think they are called croc rows (one knee on hand on bench)with heavyish weight and that has been helping.

chalk may help. I use mixed grip. Part of the problem is I telescoped my left wrist in a car accident. FYI putting you hands out to stop you when the driver hits a telephone pole at 50 MPH doesn't work.

Fat bar, square bar, Kroc rows... Anything that's hard to hold on to that you force yourself to hold on to is going to build your grip.

So what is an older guy that's abused his already shitty knees for years supposed to do? My knees have started to sound like I'm twisting a T-bone steak between two pairs of pliers when I squat, and it's putting a serious limit on the weights that my muscles are capable of. I just ordered wraps on the advice of the ol' lady who was actually paying attention to sports medicine practices while I was screwing off. She said that sleeves probably aren't going to help at this point, and I'm inclined to agree. Thoughts?

Are you doing leg extensions?

I was, but stopped for the same reason. Makes my knees ache at weights far below what I'm capable of. My legs are big. Like, I've got some serious quads, hams, and glutes. My knees on the other hand are total shit, and I've never taken care of them. I got diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatters at about 17-18, but oped out of surgery due to complications and lack of results. That combined with long hours on my feet with cement floors and cold conditions, and general abuse has left them pretty shit. I don't know what other options I really have at this point. Might be worth noting that I'm not a bodybuilder, and am an amateur strength athlete, so isolation excersice only goes as far as assisting overall strength increase.

I'm an older guy too. I say your situation is much different. You're working around an injury and you need to do what you need to do to lift.

Just wondered. I struggled with making the purchase because it felt like today knee wraps, tomorrow tampons.

Edit- And thanks :D

Like him or not, his advice on knee wraps is on spot!

The only thing they accomplish is the acceleration of chondromalacia patella and they most certainly do not provide "knee support".

I mean guys think about it we are talking about an "ace wrap" here which are used medically to maintain the position of a dressing or to REDUCE inflammatory swelling. After all if an ace wrap provided knee support (rather than an orthotic brace) the pro ball players would be using them.

Ok so when are they helpful?

1) Prophylactically, to diminish post workout swelling for those with significant degenerative joint disease. They should be wrapped snugly such that a finger is capable of entering beneath the wrap with minimal difficulty. Ice must also be used for optimal results.

2) Immediately after a injury such as an ankle or knee sprain

3) To maintain the position of a dressing

4) Some orthopedists have suggested they MAY BE useful for those with PATELLA DISLOCATIONS (not "knee dislocations" which are entirely DIFFERENT medically). In patients with a history of Patellar Dislocation an ace wrap may be useful UNTIL the quadriceps "mechanism" (muscles) have been strengthened, about 2-4 weeks depending upon patient.

5) As a life saving tourniquet for huge extremity lacerations such as those inflicted by sharks, chain saws, circular saws etc. (I KNOW of two cases where the patient dies because of others unwillingness to use a "tourniquet") In instances as these it's important to remember; YOU HAVE TO BE ALIVE TO BE INCONVENIENCED!
