I been looking into getting a Laminar Flow Hood and have a few used ones Picked out...

How important is it to have a Front acrylic panel that rolls/folds up
Here's a Few I have found...

The two brands that stand out to me are Thermo and Baker.

If anyone has any insight to what would probably be best or work that would be greatly appreciated.

I highly recommend getting one with a front sliding cover. Also, make sure that it is a vertical airflow version, not a horizontal one.

What are you using this for?

How much are you preparing at once? Unless you're processing a shitload, where a lot of stuff needs to be open to the air for significant periods of time, this is overkill.

Even a relatively weak flame, like a candle, is sufficient to create a convection current that will keep small particulates from the air (dust, dander) from falling in a decent-sized radius around it. Step it up to a camping stove with a small propane flame and you've got a kitchen table sized-area clear. That means no source of mold or bacteria from the air, either. If you can keep lids near their respective containers and be careful with your hands, you really don't need a cabinet.

If you're dispensing into a ton of vials, that's a different story.

Good read. I would have thought vert is better, but that makes sense.

you cant afford the equipment vertical requires even if you're large ugl. unless you're the top dawg. ofc default answer from AI will be vertical is best.

atleast i dont know of anyone making millions not minding spending 50k - 100k+ on per piece of equipment besides qsc and ssa and liska and only 1 of those guys had a brewer for them, rest were just resellers.

Roll up cover is not needed, get the cheapest one that is ISO certified.

Get the cheapest

I have a friend who works in the laboratory supply industry and she’s claims that laminar flow hoods are designed to keep vapor and toxins away from the user, not keep the items inside it necessarily sterile as it’s pulling air from outside into the hood. What is the thought process behind using one if that is the case?

That is correct. I work in a clean room and we do not use laminar flow hoods for that very reason. Everything is positive pressure and the intakes are on the floor.

Thats wrong a laminar flow hood pushes air through a hepa filter to sterilize the air and remove all particals larger than .3 ųm . She is referring to a Fumr hood that sucks air out to protect the users from vapors .

Laminar flow is positive pressure and your returns are on the floor creating laminar flow in the clean room. A laminar flow hood is a miniature clean room. I a large ISO clean room ypu dont need a laminar flow hood.

You don't need one to homebrew either. All you are doing is sucking dirt over the top of your gear.
