Let’s Talk Full Size/Half Ton Pickups

In all honesty, you’re going to be psyched on whatever you choose. I think it comes down to personal preference as to exterior/interior styling. All of the newer trucks are fully capable for most needs you will encounter in this class of 1/2 ton pickups. Are you planning on significant towing? If so, I'd strongly consider one of the diesel options you've pointed out?

We had a 2006 double cab Tundra for 5 years, from about 50k miles to 120k mikes. Drove that rig all over the west plus several Baja trips with slide in truck camper, which exceeded payload by 500 lbs when fully loaded. Slightly mitigated issue with airbags, and 10 ply tires. Still a bad idea, and I would never exceed payload again, especially with two young daughters added to the mix. Never had a single issue. View attachment 108215

Next, 2014 crew cab Tundra, with the 5.7L. Bought new and currently has 70k miles. Only issue: hard start caused by computer adjusting alcohol density too high, even though I've never used flex fuel. Had in dealer three times for this, no explanation as to cause. Towed a 16’ travel trailer all around the west and Canada as well. Half the miles were dragging travel trailer. Pulls strong, no problem flogging it up steep grades at 70mph. The engine does rev like a mofo at these speeds and steeps. Fuel economy is horrendous towing though...8-9 mpg at 70mph, and maybe 10 at best between 55-60 mph. About to sell the Tundra because we just picked up a:

2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD 6.6L Duramax Diesel. I hope to have the same reliability with the switch to a 3/4 ton diesel. Time will tell. Maintenance will be more expensive obviously. We recently sold the above travel trailer and will pick a new 23' Outdoors RV next week. At 6,300lbs dry, and likely 8,00lbs or more fully loaded, it will be too much for the Tundra. Although still within the 9,000lb tow rating, I'm not comfortable pushing it that close to the capacity. Planning on a month in new trailer starting mid April, then all summer beginning early June. (Work as CPAs is about to get slow until October, so we just need to check in once a week.)

love the front end on the denali

Looking heavily at a new 2019 Silverado TrailBoss. Chevy’s doing some dumb things compared to MSRP on trucks. While that doesn’t matter much in value of the truck, it’s making leasing through my credit union a massive deal as the lease calculates off msrp, meaning a ton of deprecation is covered by equity from day one on a super low off the lot price. On top of that, my CU’s lease program is much more a true “lease to own” program than any dealer option. Title in my name. Can sell/trade/release whenever I want. No penalties. Nothing down (if I was leasing just for the term with no intent to buy).

Man, get a real truck. If it’s not a 3/4 ton 4wd pick up, it doesn’t have balls. Might as well buy a skirt on your way home in you half ton.

Doesn’t have to be diesel. And fuck four doors on a truck, get a fucking bench seat up front...four doors are for sedans and wagons.

Four doors are for dads that own homes. And a gasser 2500 is like being 250lbs and legs like toothpicks.

Plenty of balls on a 5.3 w/ 4wd and a locking diff

Married with kids. And I don’t own a truck anymore...cause I don’t need one.

They’re tools...not meant to have leather interior and four doors.

But, you do what you want man...I’m just bustin’ balls!

Everything is made for convenience now. You know it's awesome to have a truck that feels like a caddy but can pull 8000 lbs. and store all kinds of shit

Nooooo, it’s awesome having a simple truck that does bad ass shit and you don’t have to pussy foot cause it has a million sensors and a $10k paint job.

That’s why your family should have two cars. Buy a fucking four door caddy if you want to drive the wife and kids around!

I have a 4 door caddy. It sits in the driveway ever since I bought the truck

This truck is cloth seats, 4wd, 2” lift, locking diff, 350hp v8, steel belted tires, seats 6 and totes my family and a full sheet of plywood. I can’t think of a better tool. No bells and whistles above it not looking like a plastic POS work truck.

To each their own.

Literally test drove them all before I got my ram. Love it and the hemi has the power I was looking for with a nice sound stock. I’ve had it for about a year and a half probably going to trade it for the new 19 ram limited. Nothing wrong with mine I just like to waste money I guess. The old ford next to it is my truck I abuse and use for work or whatever. It’s a 95 f150 with 125k miles. Best truck I’ve ever had. It’s old and the paint is fkd but it starts every day and has cold ac and never once in 10 years left me stranded . The ram is my weekend or long trip truck. I put 4K miles on it last year. 4A605054-9372-4ADE-9D70-A7BC58932081.jpeg

Working the deal.

Also getting the wife into a new car before her Range Rover breaks and fucks my wallet. So quite a few variables to work to nail it down.
Nice.

I almost bought range rover. then talked to a few friends that had them. Both said there a great car when there not in the shop.

I know you said you lean towards chevys but my dad, father in law and myself all have tundras and love them. All different models but all 5.7 v8s. Father in law has gone through 2 platinums and now has a 1794 edition. Buys them brand new and puts 70k plus a year on them towing daily. Only thing to EVER break was A/c on first platinum once. My dad and i have had no issues other than regular maintenance (knock on wood).

Most likely whatever you choose will be a good truck if taken care of. Just my .02
