Lifts Relative to Weight

Pull out your calculator and estimate your 1RM for bench and squat.

I want to know how many people on here can honestly say they can bench 1.5x BW and squat 2x bodyweight.

For example, if you weigh 200lbs, multiply this by 1.5 and you should bench at least 300lb.

Be honest!

Are you kidding me???? I'm too fat for that shit! LOL My squat has always been weak and it's pathetic at the moment. I doubt I'd hit the bench either. That'd be a 540lb squat and a 405 bench. Too heavy for me, amigo.

On the other hand, I'll knock an ass out with a knee, elbow or fist and, failing in that, I'll choke a dude out or break something important like an elbow.

As Bas Rutten says, "You can bench 400 pounds? Who cares, I can still kick your ass." :D

Grizz, the ability to do that does decrease with increasing body mass.

For me, I am currently 191, squat 375 and CG bench 295. That is 1.97 BW for squat and 1.55 BW for bench. I am also on a 2,700 calorie diet, and cutting down from 234 lb. As far as the juice, I haven't taken anything since October 2004 and my BF according to my digital caliper is around 8%.

I think I have done pretty well with my lifts all things considered, but it is much easier to get strong when bulking - eat whatever you want, lots of energy, more weight, etc. Usually I lose a lot more strength when cutting.

In comparison, my best lifts at 230+ were 405 CG bench and 500 squat (probably 550+ deadlift). That was with test and d-bol, and ALL of my lifts even maxes are done with no gear (not even a belt).

BTW, I have been using the 5x5 (slightly modified) and 3x3 for this cutting phase and my strength is doing good in my opinion. Just another endorsement for this program.

I agree with that statement 110%. When in Cali,i watched my 150lb friend who took 2nd place Arizona wrestling throw around my 250 pound friend (and 250lbs of muscle)like he was a ragdoll. AND i'm sure my 250lb friend could bench his weight with my 150lb friend on the bar

Besides tendon length, nerve discharge, etc it also has alot to do with BF levels because will all know fat won't help strength

Tell that to powerlifters in the heavy and superheavy divisions. Fat may not help "lift" the weight, but it can sure cut down on the required range of motion.

Well, I'm a bit of a lard ass. I was 270, and after 6 days of dieting am down to 255 (which I'm sure is about 99.9% water).

However, I still pretty easily match those numbers. I can bench in excess of 400 (raw) and squat probably close to 600 raw. In the next couple weeks after I carb back up I'll be frequently checking my maxes, but I assume I'll hit 405 at 250 with no problem (1.62bw), and squat 585+ at 250 as well (2.34).

In my powerlifting gear I'll bench over 600 (2.5bw) @ 242. And I'll squat 800+ @ 242 (3.3bw).

I'll tell you a good measure of strength...Standing bodyweight strict military presses for 10 reps is really strong.

Try to military you bodyweight (standing) and keep it strict and see how many reps you get.

Matt

I'll try it on Monday, but I don't think I'll get 10!

I don't see how you don't lose more strength when you lose weight. Mine falls drastically , I just always try to at least keep 1.5x BW bench and 2x squat.

My bench is the closest, my squat sucks ass after my last back injury, I think it's at least partially psychological because I was squatting when it happened. (no fault of the squat, just my physiology). Plus I've been dieting which helps the ratio but not much. As for the standing Military not even close though it's one of my favorites.

Hmmm.... Like AM, I've been dieting for the last week also... If this scale is right this morning...I am 291lbs and I am 6'2" ( I haven't had dramatic loss like AM I've lost 4 1/2lbs... also probably mostly water)

I bench 420lbs raw .... I squat 615lbs raw ( and unlike a lot of body builders I actually squat to parellel) ... also... I am not on any gear at all and haven't been for a long time.. hell, I don't even take creatine...

And with respect to pressing your body weight over your head... I don't care about body weight numbers... If a guy can press 300lbs over his head for even 1 rep be he 250lbs, 300lbs or 350lbs....He's strong as hell in my book... and just for the record.... I can also push up 300lbs over my head as well...

Actually you can split jerk 300lbs over your head.

Push 300lbs over your head and then I'll be really impressed.

Matt

So, It's like that is it?

Well, since we're being all technical and all... "Probably" Squating 600lbs is not actually squating it ... actually squat 600lbs raw and I'll be really impressed ;)

Good point.

I just never do raw squats to a max, so I guess I'm not really sure what I squat.

BTW, that wasn't really a knock on your pverhead pressing strength (which is obviously better than mine) - just a point that Conan can jerk 300 for about 10 but they guy can't push 225 over his head. That said, I know your overhead jerk has alot of press to it, so you probably aren't all that far off from a 300lb strict press.

Matt

I hope you know I was just playing around Matt.... You know I got nothing but the highest respect for you!

BTW, did you get my message about the power briefs and squat suit?

I am pretty weak, so I'll brag about someone else...

I knew this guy in highschool that wrestled at 103 or 105 or whatever the weight is just above 100# and his 1RM's were something like; bench- 225, squat-just below 300 (I remember he could never get 300) and he deadlifted like 275. Now although he wrestled at 103 or whatever he really weighed around 115 or so, but he is still one of the strongest pound for pound I have ever seen.

Phreez,

I did get your message, but for some reason your phone number didn't show up on my caller ID and you didn't leave the number when you left the message.

I'll be home most of the afternoon if you want to give me ring.

Matt

Weight - 195 to 205 depending on carb status.

Bench - 320
Squat - 455
Dead - 475

Forgive the lack of math. And the above is without suits, wraps, etc. But I'm a performance athlete, not a weightlifter. (Don't take that the wrong way powerlifters.)
